A reappraisal of the political and socioeconomic history of Eastern
Armenia in the nineteenth century. Contrary to popular views, the
province of Erevan under the governorship of its last khan, Hosein Qoli,
is shown to be one of the better administered regions of the Persian
realm. The author has investigated the political, economic, demo-
graphic, and religious structures in Eastern Armenia during the transi-
tional period from Persian to Russian rule. He has based his study on
various archival sources and primary works in Russian, Persian, and
Armenian. Many records and ledgers are translated into English for the
first time. Ten maps.
