Today, this trend has spread to most regional parties, who rule nearly half of India single-handed or in coalition with a national party. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kedar Nath Sharma is a journalist. After completing his education from Allahabad and Lucknow universities he joined The Times of India (ToI) in Lucknow in 1964. He served ToI as a reporter at Lucknow, Delhi and Ahmedabad for fourteen years before moving on to the Middle East as a senior journalist at the Gulf Times, a daily newspaper published from Doha (Qatar). After a sixteen-year stint with the Gulf Times as a senior reporter, news editor and business editor, he moved on to Reuters as a journalist based in Doha (Qatar), covering mainly energy and political affairs. In 2003 he returned home, from where he continued to contribute to the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Qatar affairs. He also wrote for Financial Times Energy, Business Middle East and Oxford Analytica.
