Timber(cid:561)is(cid:561)a(cid:561)widely(cid:561)used(cid:561)construction(cid:561)material(cid:561)that(cid:561)is(cid:561)characterized(cid:561)by(cid:561)its(cid:561)structural(cid:561)efficiency(cid:561)in(cid:561)
terms(cid:561)of(cid:561)relatively(cid:561)high(cid:561)strength(cid:556)(cid:561)and(cid:561)stiffness(cid:556)to(cid:556)weight(cid:561)ratios(cid:561)and(cid:561)high(cid:561)sustainability.(cid:561)Two(cid:561)
major(cid:561)concerns(cid:561)exist(cid:561)on(cid:561)the(cid:561)material(cid:561)level(cid:561)however,(cid:561)i.e.(cid:561)the(cid:561)strong(cid:561)anisotropy(cid:561)and(cid:561)limited(cid:561)
ductility,(cid:561)particularly(cid:561)if(cid:561)subjected(cid:561)to(cid:561)tension.(cid:561)The(cid:561)anisotropy(cid:561)complicates(cid:561)the(cid:561)joining(cid:561)of(cid:561)structural(cid:561)
components,(cid:561)which(cid:561)in(cid:561)most(cid:561)cases(cid:561)is(cid:561)done(cid:561)using(cid:561)steel(cid:561)elements(cid:561)such(cid:561)as(cid:561)bolts(cid:561)or(cid:561)nails.(cid:561)The(cid:561)joint(cid:561)
design(cid:561)thus(cid:561)often(cid:561)governs(cid:561)the(cid:561)overall(cid:561)design(cid:561)and(cid:561)results(cid:561)in(cid:561)an(cid:561)overdesigning(cid:561)of(cid:561)the(cid:561)components(cid:561)
between(cid:561)the(cid:561)joints.(cid:561)(cid:561)
The(cid:561)approach(cid:561)adopted(cid:561)in(cid:561)this(cid:561)thesis(cid:561)was(cid:561)to(cid:561)overcome(cid:561)these(cid:561)two(cid:561)problems(cid:561)by(cid:561)developing(cid:561)ductile(cid:561)
adhesively(cid:556)bonded(cid:561)joints.(cid:561)The(cid:561)use(cid:561)of(cid:561)ductile(cid:561)adhesives(cid:561)improves(cid:561)the(cid:561)stress(cid:561)state(cid:561)in(cid:561)the(cid:561)joints,(cid:561)
resulting(cid:561)in(cid:561)greater(cid:561)joint(cid:561)efficiency(cid:561)compared(cid:561)to(cid:561)bolted(cid:561)or(cid:561)nailed(cid:561)joints.(cid:561)The(cid:561)adhesive’s(cid:561)ability(cid:561)to(cid:561)
dissipate(cid:561)inelastic(cid:561)energy(cid:561)also(cid:561)allows(cid:561)system(cid:561)ductility(cid:561)to(cid:561)be(cid:561)incorporated(cid:561)into(cid:561)the(cid:561)timber(cid:561)
structure.(cid:561)To(cid:561)develop(cid:561)such(cid:561)ductile(cid:561)adhesive(cid:561)joints,(cid:561)the(cid:561)adhesive’s(cid:561)viscoelastic(cid:561)material(cid:561)behavior(cid:561)
under(cid:561)large(cid:561)strains(cid:561)and(cid:561)variable(cid:561)strain(cid:561)rates(cid:561)and(cid:561)the(cid:561)inelastic(cid:561)energy(cid:561)dissipation(cid:561)capacity(cid:561)had(cid:561)
first(cid:561)to(cid:561)be(cid:561)investigated(cid:561)and(cid:561)characterized.(cid:561)The(cid:561)joint(cid:561)concept(cid:561)was(cid:561)then(cid:561)validated(cid:561)by(cid:561)full(cid:556)scale(cid:561)

been(cid:561)established(cid:561)(including(cid:561)Poisson(cid:561)ratio,(cid:561)ductility(cid:561)and(cid:561)recovery),(cid:561)two(cid:561)types(cid:561)of(cid:561)adhesively(cid:556)
bonded(cid:561)timber(cid:561)joints(cid:561)were(cid:561)experimentally(cid:561)studied(cid:561)in(cid:561)tension(cid:561)and(cid:561)compression:(cid:561)stiff(cid:561)epoxy(cid:561)and(cid:561)
ductile(cid:561)acrylic(cid:561)joints.(cid:561)The(cid:561)latter(cid:561)ones(cid:561)exhibited(cid:561)lower(cid:561)stiffness(cid:561)but(cid:561)higher(cid:561)capacity(cid:561)and(cid:561)
ductility,(cid:561)as(cid:561)explained(cid:561)by(cid:561)the(cid:561)extracted(cid:561)stresses(cid:561)and(cid:561)strains(cid:561)too.(cid:561)(cid:561)
