Progress in Colloid and Interface Science (PCIS)
This is the third volume in the book series dedicated to colloids and inter-
faces.Thefirstvolumedealtwiththemechanicalpropertiesofliquidinterfacesand
discussed the experimental and theoretical state of the art of elastic and viscous
properties of liquid surface layers. This book is obviously the first comprehen-
sive description of the 2D rheology of liquid interfaces. Volume two represents
theprogressmadeinutilizingdropsandbubblesforaquantitativecharacterization
ofliquidinterfacialproperties.
This third volume contributes to the field of characterization of solid surfaces.
Thechapterscoverthetheoreticalandexperimentalaspectsofwettingandwettabil-
ity,liquid–solidinterfacialproperties,spreadingdynamics.Interestingpeculiarities
arediscussed,suchasthephenomenaofsuper-spreadingandsuper-hydrophobicity.
Somesectionsdealwithspecificsolidsurfaces.Forexample,reactionsandwet-
ting of liquid metals at high temperatures is discussed, and also the interaction

Wetting science, in its more classical definition, studies the way of interaction of
a fluid with a solid surface, which determines the specific shape that liquids as-
sumewhentheyaredepositedonasolidsubstrate.T.Youngin1805[1]statedthat
a liquid drop placed on a solid surface assumes a geometrical shape that can be
describedbyhisfamousformula(1),thatbecamethemilestoneofwettingstudies:
