This book began on one of those long, languid summer afternoons when friends casually stop by the house to pass some time and cool off a bit. Over cold drinks and 
fruit salad we swapped stories. As a coda to his tale, one guest quoted the words of "the most renowned schnorrer of them all, Manasseh Bueno Barzillai Azevedo 
da Costa." Enjoying my quizzical look immensely, he explained, "You know, Israel Zangwill's hilarious hero in The King of Schnorrers."
Israel Zangwill, the Anglo­Jewish author? The same Israel Zangwill who had advocated establishing a Jewish homeland in "Uganda"! The same Israel Zangwill who 
had advocated assimilation into the American "melting pot"! I was suddenly struck by the notion that this man's biography rather resembles one of those strange and 
profound riddlic poems in the Anglo­Saxon Exeter Book that must be solved to be appreciated.
And he reminded me of so many conversations I have heard since my childhood—those conversations people have with friends and with strangers about what it really 
means to be "Jewish." Does being "Jewish" imply having a special culture (e.g., being an Anglo­Jewish author), or does it refer to a nationality (e.g., having a homeland 
somewhere, like everyone else), or is it a religion (e.g., in the American "melting pot'')? (A fourth alternative, that Jews constitute a biological "race," has now generally 
been eliminated from most of these conversations.)
These conversations about Jewish identity usually conclude with the views you have been opposing being routed convincingly. Unfortunately there is small satisfaction 
in this victory, as this is also true for everyone taking part in the discussion: your own view, too, has just received a drubbing. With this all­inclusive checkmate comes 
the uneasy feeling that it would be better if we didn't talk about this subject again for a while. And so we don't, at least till the next time.
The origin of this difficulty in defining exactly what "Jewish" means

lies somehow in the categories available in modern thought and speech we post­Enlightenment Westerners now employ in our conceptions about collective identities. 
In premodern traditions, the members of a society experienced their identity as an articulated notion of "we who are not they" (i.e., everyone who is unlike "we"). And 
"we" were defined by the organic sum of "our" distinctive values, beliefs, and practices, all of which marked ''us" off clearly from "them."
But Western modernity has transmuted these cohesive collective qualities of identity into categorical descriptions of entirely discrete social roles—cultural, national, 
and religious—assumed by an autonomous self. Depending on which concern a particular individual wishes to address, he may now define his identity, for instance, as 
Western, Singaporese, or Methodist, three distinctive, nonintersecting categories.
By contrast, despite its almost two centuries of exposure to the processes of Westernization, "Jewish" as an identity continues to retain its premodern traditional 
connotations. It therefore intersects with all but coincides with none of these separable post­Enlightenment descriptions. Hence contemporary attempts to reduce it to 
just one of the available modern categories of identity, being arbitrary and incomplete, must necessarily founder.
How very disturbing this all is! If my neighbors can readily define their own identities and I cannot define mine, then I know—and they know—that I am somehow 
different. What is worse: I do not even know why I cannot accomplish what they do so effortlessly. But I really am unable to do any better; every category I seize 
upon can be refuted and so breaks down in the end. What commonly occurs, therefore, is that modern Jews do not often think analytically about the definition of their 
Jewish identity but act as if it implies all three categories. Thus, for the contemporary Jew, an unsettling indeterminacy has become a new and prominent component of 
his notion of Jewish identity.
An exception to this common pattern, Israel Zangwill did think and write extensively about the question of contemporary Jewish identity. He did so obsessively for 
over thirty­five years. And although we may employ a somewhat altered terminology, we really have neither progressed beyond his formulation, at the beginning of the 
twentieth century, of the problem of defining it nor gone beyond his proposed answers to this troubling enigma. But what we have learned during these several decades
