Bullough and Dominic Bird)

PREFACE
DRAGONS’ DEN
The concept of Dragons’ Den originated in Japan and is now a
successful television format owned by Sony. When Sony Television
International licensed the format rights for Dragons’ Den to the
BBC in 2004, only a few believed that the show would enjoy a
long-term success. But five series later the show has captured the
imagination of viewers and become one of BBC2’s highest rated
programs.
The pressure of those asking for investment is enormous. Not only
do they have to prepare themselves for the Dragons’ scrutiny, they
may also have been waiting for up to six hours before being sent
into the Dragons’ Den. The pressures of the waiting hours for their
one opportunity, appearing under television cameras and trying to
capture the Dragons’ attention late into the day, has seen many a
budding entrepreneur crumble under their nerves. For those
entrepreneurs who are fortunate enough to win an investment, the
handshakes and congratulations are only the beginning. In the
weeks following the show, the two parties must go through the
process of due diligence so that the Dragons can find out if the
business facts that they have been told on television actually stack
up. Several deals have fallen through and, as Duncan Bannatyne
said, ‘we don’t hand over money to people who don’t tell us the
truth.’
The show’s format has been successfully sold across the world and
versions of Dragons’ Den have been broadcast in Japan, the United
Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Holland, Canada and
Finland. The Dragons’ titles have ranged from Tigers to Sharks, but
the show’s success across the world has proven that ordinary people
want to become extraordinary entrepreneurs. Welcome to the
Dragons’ Den!

CHARACTERS:
EVAN DAVIS
Evan Davis is the presenter of Dragons’ Den and has an unenviable
task of welcoming the would-be entrepreneurs into the Den and
then de-briefing them as they emerge either triumphant, or more
often than not, with their tails between their legs. It is a role that
demands diplomatic skill, as Evan must sympathize with the
bruised egos of the entrepreneurs whilst acknowledging the
reasons why the Dragons have turned them down.
DUNCAN BANNATYNE
His reputation as a tough-talking Scot with an air of charming
bravado has meant that Duncan is one of the pivotal attractions of
the series. Along with Peter Jones, Duncan is the only Dragon
remaining from the original series and the two have locked
professional horns on several occasions.
RACHEL ELNAUGH
Rachel Elnaugh is one of Britain’s high-profile female
entrepreneurs. Since appearing in Dragons’ Den, Rachel is now
involved heavily in the Small Business Sector, providing help,
inspiration and motivation to budding entrepreneurs.
PETER JONES
Peter’s ambition to run a multi-million pound company can be
traced back to his early childhood, when he spent many hours after
school sitting in his father’s executive leather chair, dreaming of
entrepreneurial success. He went on to make that dream a reality,
building a £200 million business empire before he was thirty-five.
7
He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of a wide portfolio of
businesses ranging from telecoms and leisure to publishing, media
and recruitment.
DOUG RICHARD
Doug is a successful entrepreneur with 20 years’ experience in the
development and leadership of technology and software ventures, in
both America and the UK In his early career Doug established
himself in the technology sector by founding and subsequently
selling Visual Software and ITAL Computers.
SIMON WOODROFFE
In 1997 Simon founded “YO! Sushi” the conveyor belt sushi bar. In
1999 Simon won the Ernst &Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Award and became part of the CB/BCC Ambassador of
Entrepreneurism campaign. Royal recognition came in 2006 when
Simon was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honors list for
his contribution to hospitality. The media exposure of Dragons’ Den
led to a deluge of requests for Simon to share the story of the
entrepreneurial success on the international public speaking circuit.
«I never met anyone who went out to follow their dream and
regretted it regardless of whether they later succeeded or failed,
but I have met many people who looked back later in their lives
and said “I wish I’d taken that opportunity when I had the
chance. ”Just remember, 1% done each day becomes 100%
improvement at the end of 3 months. Don’t give anything up
except perhaps your TV set – create time and start doing the pre-
work: acting as if it is going to happen».
Simon Woodroffe, September 2007

1 Pitch: Baby Dream Machine.
Script
Evan Davis: First into the Dragons’ Den is Graham Whitby. Now,
he gave up a well-paid marketing job to risk everything on a new
invention he is helping to launch. He is looking for an investment of
150, 000 pounds. But remember – he has to get at least that amount,
or he goes away with nothing.
Graham Whitby: Excuse me one moment. Ok, thank you for your
patience. My name is Graham Whitby. I’m Managing Director of
Baby Dream Machine Ltd. Today we are looking for an investment
of £150, 000. The Baby Dream Machine … oh …my… we … the
business … I’m a father of three, OK? So … very sorry … I’m a
father of three, and we started our affair, when my wife and I, when
we had our first child. We went into horrendous sleepless nights and
as when we moved on to having our second … oh, dear, dear, no…
I’ll start again. So my name is Graham Whitby, and I’m Managing
Director of Baby Dream Machine Ltd. We are here today looking
for £150, 000. I’m a father of three. And when we had our first
child, it was enough spot…anybody …of parenthood, here really
was. So, we…when we first started our own venture… the
business… I can’t do it…
Doug Richard: Would you rather answer questions?
Graham Whitby: No, no, I’m going to start again, I’m going to
compose myself… OK, I’m the Managing Director of Baby Dream
Machine Ltd. We are tallying here for £150, 000.
Evan Davis: The pitch is a vital part of getting investment, but
Graham’s nerves have got the better of him.
Rachel Elnaugh: So, just tell us what the thing does, and switch it
on, and…
Graham: OK, the machine itself is quite straightforward. You have
a child, it’s inside the push-chair and it’s quite simple to operate.
9
We have a switch off, we have two speeds on the machine. It starts
off with the… oh, my God… It’s dreadful!
Doug Richard: Leaving aside your obvious nervousness, do you
put a baby into the thing and they fall asleep?
Graham Whitby: They do fall asleep! We’ve got plenty of video
footage of the machine, utterly …what again…. It does work, yes.
Doug Richard: And how much are you going to charge for the
thing?
Graham Whitby: It’ll be in the order between £100-£250.
Doug Richard: Are there any health regulations?
Graham Whitby: Sorry?
Doug Richard: Are there any health or safety regulations you have
to overcome?
Graham Whitby: We’ve designed… we’ve designed the machine,
so that .. .so that it complies with all the necessary regulations and
standards. It’s a simple push-pull operation as well, so you press the
button, 15 minutes it’ll operate for, parent go to sleep, hopefully,
the child will go to sleep. We can’t guarantee that the machine will
send the child to sleep…but…parent doing the norm…
Doug Richard: Striking guarantee!
Graham Whitby: Rocking makes sure emotionally…he gets in the
machine, that’s quite…
Doug Richard: You know, I find myself offing…
Simon Woodroffe: I think, this is a product for the parents as well
as the child is very-very… I’m speaking here completely… become
at ease, I’m mesmerized.
Duncan Bannatyne: I don’t know why you…you want us to invest.
I don’t know why you don’t go to “Mothercare” and say: “Record
this fantastic thing, you sell it in your shops, you give me some
money, and you have another contract”.
