Letter from Paul Ramsey, CEO for UW Medicine
Dear Colleagues,
UW Medicine’s efforts in clinical care, research and education are
all targeted toward accomplishing our singular mission – to improve
the health of the public. We have been partnering with community
physicians practicing throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska,
Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) for more than 40 years to do just that!
Many community physicians throughout this vast five-state region
volunteer as clinical faculty at the University of Washington School
of Medicine and provide outstanding community-based training
experiences for our medical students, many of whom return to those
communities to practice.
UW physicians assist the region’s community physicians by providing
consultations and becoming a valued team member on cases
involving patients with complex medical conditions. When necessary,
physicians may transfer patients to one of UW Medicine’s world-

class hospitals – Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center,
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, and most recently, Valley Medical Center.
As an academic medical center, our physicians also have access to the latest discoveries and thinking in
clinical research – research that may improve the outcomes of your patients.
MEDCON, an educational and referral service, has knowledgeable consultation coordinators available 24
hours a day to connect you by phone to experts from the UW Medical School. MEDCON coordinators
can also help you with patient referrals to faculty practicing at our medical centers.
This year, we are going green with our UW Medicine Clinical Referral Directory. You received this
directory on a self-updating CD or USB that will provide you with the most up-to-date information
related to our faculty. This new technology allows us to make changes in real time. The CD is also
designed to print-on-demand if you prefer to have a printed directory. And, of course, you can access
us online via our website at www.UWMedicineClinicalDirectory.com. UW Medicine is here to help you

UW Medicine Transfer Center for Urgent/Emergent Referrals

The Transfer Center’s registered nurses work 24/7 to coordinate the rapid, safe transfer of critically ill
or injured patients throughout the region to UW Medicine’s facilities. The nurses locate appropriate
consulting physicians and facilitate lifesaving conversations within minutes. The center’s Virtual Private
Network (VPN) enables the specialists to review your patient’s electronic medical record and digital
radiology images in real time. Together you can develop a care plan and begin your patient’s treatment
immediately.

outpatient appointments and procedures across the UW Medicine health system.

If you need to confirm a diagnosis or refer your patient for advanced care after speaking to one of our
specialists, call Medcon, a 24/7, toll-free service of the UW School of Medicine and its academic medical
centers. Consultation coordinators will connect you with the appropriate faculty physician for a consult.

UW Medicine is affiliated with Seattle Children’s, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Veteran’s
Affairs Healthcare System in Seattle, and the Boise VA Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. We share in the
ownership and governance of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Children’s University Medical Group.
When you refer your patient to a UW Medicine physician or service, you know your patient will benefit
from all the knowledge, skills, experience and resources that UW Medicine has to offer.

U-Link gives participating practitioners secure online access to electronic medical records of their
patients referred to UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
Support staff may enroll as part of a U-Link group account as long as one group member is a licensed
practitioner.

Physician liaisons for selective services (radiology, cardiovascular, oncology, transplant, maternal-fetal
medicine) serve as personal contacts for referring physicians’ questions, feedback, concerns about
facilitating patient access.

Working with first responders, Airlift Northwest transports critically ill and injured patients to UW
Medicine facilities and other specialty care centers in the contiguous United States and Canada. Aircraft
are strategically located in Juneau, Alaska, and Arlington, Bellingham, Olympia and Seattle, Wash. and
most recently, ALNW has begun day-basing a turbo commander in Yakima, Wash from 11 am to 11
pm, seven days a week to accelerate transfers from central Washington. Each Airlift Northwest flight is
equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment and two critical-care nurses to ensure that patients are
stabilized from pickup point to final destination.

To maximize the chances of survival and good outcomes for your patients, we recommend clinically
proven stabilization protocols for transporting patients, including those experiencing burns, aortic
aneurysms and/or aortic dissection, stroke and other potentially life-threatening conditions.

Stroke Referrals
UW Medicine provides comprehensive stroke care at Harborview Medical Center and Northwest
Hospital and Medical Center. Both locations are certified as Primary Stroke Centers by The Joint
Commission.
Through our TeleStroke Partnership Program, we offer referring physicians full access to our world-class
specialists and services around-the-clock every day.
Consulting partners receive immediate telephone consultation with a vascular neurologist. The specialist
can review the patient’s digital radiology images via a VPN and provide immediate feedback to the
physician requesting consultation.
As part of in-depth training provided with the TeleStroke Partnership Program, you can learn more
about stroke protocols and interventions.
Our interdisciplinary team of vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons and interventional radiologists
can help you determine whether your patient will be best served by staying at your hospital or being
transferred to the UW Medicine Stroke Center at Harborview or Northwest Hospital and Medical Center.

Consult
UW Medicine publishes an on-line publication called Consult to inform the medical community in
Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho about new clinical services and other developments
of interest.
Continuing Medical Education
The University of Washington School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education offers an array
of educational opportunities to support physicians and allied healthcare professionals who want to
enhance their knowledge, skill and professional performance. All our courses are CME-credit approved.
Health and Medicine Programs on UW TV
UW TV offers several videos on health and medicine that may be of interest to you, your staff and your
patients. All our programs are available through the UW TV website.
