Résumé
« Analyser l’évolution de l’architecture domestique dans sa double consistance d’espace
matériel (le cadre architecturé) et d’espace pratico-symbolique (usage et représentation) » tel
est l’objectif de la présente recherche. Cet objectif est fondé sur une assertion selon laquelle,
l’étude des transformations de l’architecture domestique nécessite l’analyse de la matérialité,
des pratiques et des représentations. Lorsque ces éléments sont réunis dans l’analyse dans une
perspective diachronique, ils permettent de comprendre les mutations qui s’opèrent.
Pour décrypter les mécanismes ayant engendré les mutations de l’architecture domestique et
ainsi reconstituer la morphogénèse de l’habitation populaire, une hypothèse a été posée ; elle
suggère que l’habitation individuelle autoproduite se réfère dans ses expressions
contemporaines, à une structure spatiale traditionnelle, en même temps elle évolue par
l’évolution de son usage et de son aspect extérieur. C’est la manière dont l’architecture
domestique à Biskra se réfère à la tradition populaire et en même temps intègre des éléments
nouveaux, tant au niveau des formes bâties qu’au niveau des pratiques quotidiennes, des
perceptions et des significations, que nous avons voulu étudier de manière approfondie dans
la présente recherche.
Pour ce faire, un cadre méthodologique à été élaboré, il se fonde sur une approche dynamique
(diachronique) multidisciplinaire où l’architecture est associée à la fois à la sociologie et à la
psychologie environnementale. Trois axes de recherches ont été investis :
⎯ L’axe «architectural» étudie la maison dans sa réalité matérielle et ses formes bâties,
les méthodes requises dans cette approche relèvent des analyses typologiques,
morphologiques et typo-morphologiques. Les données exploitées dans le cadre de ces
différentes analyses sont essentiellement graphiques à savoir des plans archivés ou
établis par nous-mêmes (relevés architecturaux), des cartes et des photos. L’axe
architectural tente de caractériser l’architecture domestique d’un point de vue
diachronique, la maison populaire est étudiée dans sa forme et sa consistance matérielle,
les modalités de ses transformations sont mises en exergue.
⎯ L’axe socio-spatial a permis d’étudier l’expression des pratiques habitantes et leurs
corollaires les modèles d’habiter. Ce deuxième axe de recherche fait prévaloir une
approche de teneur à la fois sociologique et ethnologique. Il s’appuie sur l’analyse de
l’espace social (habité) du fait qu’il est le lieu où se déploient les usages et les modes
d’appropriation spatio-fonctionnelle, et ce faisant, il permet de faire une liaison entre un
état de la société et sa traduction spatiale. L’étude de l’usage et des modalités
d’appropriation de l’espace domestique a été effectuée sur la base de relevés ethno-
architecturaux et d’entretiens.
⎯ L’axe « perceptuel » appréhende la maison en tant que lieu investi de significations, un
espace riche de sens, où chaque composant joue un rôle déterminant par rapport à des
données sociales et culturelles tant au niveau de l’usage et de la distribution des espaces
de la vie domestique que du traitement plastique des éléments constructifs et décoratifs.
Cet axe investit les expériences perceptives de différents groupes d’individus pour
cerner les contours de l’« image mentale » qu’ils associent à la maison. L’axe
« perceptuel » étudie les représentations sociales préfigurant l’image mentale de la
maison et de l’habiter. Le cadre méthodologique élaboré à cet effet, s’appuie sur le
discours des habitants relatif à la maison.
En se conformant au cadre méthodologique élaboré et en se reportant aux spécificités
sociales, urbaines et architecturales de la ville de Biskra, cette recherche s’est proposée
d'investir l'architecture et l'espace domestique comme expression de modèles d’habiter en
mutation. S’inscrivant dans une approche diachronique, l’étude a fait ressortir les traits
morphologiques, techniques, pratico-symboliques et esthétiques du cadre bâti résidentiel
autoproduit. L’esprit de la démarche consistait à étudier l’habitation populaire du point de
vue d’une chronologie historique jalonnée de cinq strates temporelles restituant l’évolution
urbaine de Biskra. Pour chaque époque l’habitation populaire a été caractérisée selon sa
matérialité et relativement à la pratique et aux usages spatiaux dont elle est investie.
A son issue, l’étude a réussi à retracer l’évolution de l’architecture domestique à Biskra et a
abouti à l’élaboration d’une typologie généalogique de sa maison populaire. Elle a, en outre,
permis de mieux discerner ce qui est en jeu dans le processus de production et de
transformation de l’habitation populaire. Le modèle vernaculaire, notamment, est au centre du
processus évolutif générant les transformations de l’architecture domestique. Ce processus
est sélectif, il maintient les aspects du modèle vernaculaire qui fondent les modes d’habiter
tout en le soumettant à des remaniements structurels qui tendent à le faire évoluer. En
évoluant le modèle vernaculaire intègre certains éléments neufs et modernes sous réserve
qu’ils correspondent aux besoins des habitants, qu’ils répondent à leurs aspirations et qu’ils
s’accordent à leurs représentations. Les choix effectués sont régis par la tradition populaire et
portent sur l’ensemble des types d’habitat privé -expressions matérialisées de l’archétype de
la maison populaire- qu’ils finissent par transformer.
Ces transformations se manifestent sous différents aspects: spatiaux et morphologiques,
fonctionnels et ethnosociologiques, esthétiques et représentationnels. Elles se distinguent
selon qu’elles relèvent de motivations représentationnelles (tout ce qui concerne la façade) ou
qu’elles soient induites par des pratiques et des usages quotidiens liés aux modes de vie plutôt
stables et conformistes. Finalement, l’évolution de l’habitat privé ne peut s’expliquer que sous
l’éclairage d’un contexte socioculturel dynamique qui juxtapose dans un même lieu, celui de
la maison, l’expression des modèles d’habiter conventionnels et des signes de la modernité, la
manifestation de l’être contre le paraître.

Abstract
The objective of this research is “to analyze the evolution of domestic architecture in its
double consistency of material space (the architectural framework) and of practical-symbolic
spatial system (use and representation)”. This objective is based on an assertion according to
which, the study of the transformations of domestic architecture requires the analysis of the
materiality, the practices and the representations. When these elements are joined together in
the analysis from a diachronic point of view, they allow the understanding of the changes
which take place.
To decipher the mechanisms which generate the changes of domestic architecture and thus
to reconstitute the morphogenesis of the popular house, an assumption was proposed; it
claims that the individual auto-produced dwelling refers in its contemporary expressions, to a
traditional spatial structure, at the same time it evolves by the evolution of its use and its
appearance. It is the way in which domestic architecture in Biskra refers to the popular
tradition and at the same time integrates new elements, both on the level of built forms as on
the level of daily practices, perceptions and significances that we wanted to study deeply in
this research.
With this intention, a methodological framework has been elaborated, it is based on a
dynamic (diachronic) and multidisciplinary approach where architecture is associated both to
sociology and environmental psychology. Three research axes were invested:
-The “architectural” axis studies the house in its material reality and its built forms, the
necessary methods in this approach concern the typological, morphological and typo-
morphological analysis. The data exploited within the framework of these various analyses
are primarily graphic, whether archived plans or established by ourselves (architectural
surveys), cards and photographs. The architectural axis tries to characterize the domestic
architecture from a diachronic point of view, the popular house is studied in its form and its
material consistency, and the methods of its transformations are put forward.
-The “socio-spatial” axis permits to study the expression of the living practices and their
corollaries the models to live. This second research axis prevail an approach which has at the
same time a sociological and ethnological content. It is based on the analysis of social space
(living space) which is the place where the uses and the modes of spatial and functional
appropriation can be observed, and by doing this, it allows making a connection between the
state of a society and itsspatial interpretation. The usage study as well as the terms of
domestic space appropriation was carried out on the basis of ethno-architectural statements
and speech.
-The “perceptual” axis apprehends the house as an invested place of significances, a rich
space of senses, where each component plays a determining role compared to social and
cultural data both on the level of the use and distribution of domestic spaces as on plastic
treatment of the constructive and decorative elements. This axis invests the perceptive
experiments of various groups of individuals to determine contours of the “mental image”
which they associate to the house. The “perceptual” axis studies the social representations
preceding the mental image of the house and the living space. The method used is based on
the speech of the inhabitants concerning the house.
According to the elaborated methodological framework and referring to social, urban and
architectural specificities of Biskra, this research proposed to invest both architecture and
domestic space as an expression of changing models of inhabiting. Falling under a diachronic
approach, the study emphasized the morphological, technical, practical, symbolic and esthetic
features of the auto-produced residential built framework. The spirit of the approach consisted
in studying the popular dwelling from an historical and chronological point of view. Five
temporal layers restoring the urban evolution of Biskra were examined. For each period, the
popular dwelling was characterized according to its materiality and compared to the practice
and the uses in which it is invested.
In its issue, the study succeeded in retracing the evolution of domestic architecture in
Biskra and led to the development of a genealogical typology of its popular house. Moreover,
it made it possible to better distinguish what is at stake in the production process and
transformation of the popular dwelling. The vernacular model, in particular, is in the center of
the evolutionary process generating the transformations of domestic architecture. This process
is selective; it maintains the aspects of the vernacular model which is based on the inhabiting
modes, subjecting it to structural rehandlings which tend to make it evolve. While evolving
the vernacular model integrates certain new and modern elements, on condition that they
correspond to the inhabitants needs, answer to their aspirations and agree to their
representations. The choices carried out are determined by the popular tradition and they
cover all types of private habitat -materialized expressions of the popular house archetype-
which they end up transforming.
These transformations appear under various aspects: spatial and morphological, functional
and ethno-sociological, aesthetic and representational. They are distinguished according to
whether they raise because of representational motivations (all that relates to the façade) or
induced by practices and daily uses related to the rather stable and conformists lifestyles.
Finally, the evolution of the private habitat can be explained only under the lighting of a
dynamic socio-cultural context which juxtaposes in the same place, that of the house, the
expression of the conventional models of living and signs of modernity, the demonstration of
human being against appearances.
