Introduction
In the 1990s, a large number of historical technical reports were transferred from the
Department of National Defence to the Canadian War Museum. The sequence began
during the Second World War with reports on vehicle testing carried out at the
Ordnance Proving Grounds (OPG) near Ottawa, Ontario, continued through the
reorganizations and re-naming of the facility over the years, and ended with some
reports from the Land Engineering and Test Establishment that closed in 1994. The
collection included a sequence of reports from the Army Engineering Design Branch of
the Department of Munitions and Supply (DMS), as well as documents from other
countries and organizations.
The importance of the OPG to LETE sequence - more than 750 reports - is that, for the
most part, they are original reports, with the original photographs and data sheets.
Also, they are the only known, surviving copies. The DMS group - more than 350
documents - are mostly photocopies, and again, are the only known surviving copies
of the reports.
In 2006, with the museum in a new building, the reports were sorted, properly stored,
and a finder’s aid [list] was created for the collection. This document is a pdf version of
the finder’s aid’s MS-Excel file, with an introduction and glossary.
The collection received from DND was retained as a unit in the CWM archives. The
CWM has other reports from the same series that had been received separately over
the years, and they are included in the CWM library, not their archives. Anyone who is
searching for a specific report should check the library search engine as well as this
document.
Access to the reports is through the Military History Research Centre at the Canadian
War Museum.
The General Sequence of Units
• No. 1 Proving Ground Establishment, RCOC, formed 23 July 1941, which

• The Land Engineering Test Establishment (LETE), formed on 22 March 1967, and
that was disbanded in September 1994.

The following abbreviations are used in the reports. At this time (early 2021, I cannot
get access to the reports to get the missing ones.
