Divine Names is a unique contribution to understanding life and oneself on a deeper level: by learning to open to
the Divine. It draws on original Arabic literature—often not available in European languages—and on the
author’s many years of personal practice, teaching, and guiding others on their spiritual path to healing, tc\
becoming whole. It focuses on the use of the Divine Names in dhikr, individual meditations and healing practices.
Whether we admit it or not, human beings are searchers: we want to understand; we want to know; we want to
be known. Our quest may take many forms, yet ultimately it ends in nothing but pure praising of the Divine, even
if this comes after our last breath.The outside always furthers the inside because the task and the meaning of life
is always about reuniting—about connecting everything on the outside to its inner truth. It is the knowledge of
the heart which is always capable of uniting. Such is the path of the Sufis.
The Sufi tradition centers on the opening of the heart and nothing touches the heart as much as beauty. In this
book, the author’s unique style of writing, which combines clarity and poetic inspiration, is coupled with
distinctive and ornamental Arabic calligraphy of each of the 99 Divine Names to make it a visually stunning
tribute to this tradition. It will be enjoyed regardless of a person’s religious beliefs.
Rosina-Fawzia al-Rawi holds a PhD in Islamic studies and is the author of several books, including
Grandmother's SecretsrThe Ancient Rituals and Healing Power of Belly Dancing and Midnight Tales: A Woman's
journey through the Middle East. Born in Iraq, she has lived and studied in several countries both
in Europe and in the Middle East.
Monique Arav MA, Dip. Int. has worked with Fawzia Al-Rawi on many projects that have required
cross-cultural sensitivity to achieve their vital communicative aims. Her own multi-cultural origins and
background together with her generosity of spirit and love for inner beauty serve to make her more
than a fitting communicator for this particular book.
Majed Seif is a New York-based visual artist specializing in Arabic calligraphy, Arabesque and
other Islamic arts. He currently teaches Arabic calligraphy at the United Nations and at
New York University (NYU). Majed was born in Jerusalem and obtained a degree in Arabic calligraphy
from the Institute of Fine Arts in Ramallah, Palestine.

him in silence, basking in the light of his great soul. A deep bond developed in those precious years,

All quotations from the Holy Qur’an are from The Message of the Qur'an, translated and explained by
Muhammad Asad (Islamic Book Trust, 2011).
In attempting to illuminate the Divine Names, I am indebted as well to the oral tradition of wisdom
transmitted by Shaykh Sidi and other teachers in the form of commentaries, sayings, and stories. Other
quotations in this book are from the author’s personal notes and from the several sources listed in the
bibliography.
Translation
Throughout this translation, the plural form has been used wherever possible to refer to both genders. Wherever
the masculine has been used without referring to a male person, this choice was made so as not to hamper the
flow of reading. But it is intended to convey a universal meaning and refers to both women and men.
For the sake of simplicity and consistency, Allah, God, the Eternal Great Beloved, is referred to as
‘He’ in this book, although the Absolute is clearly neither male nor female, but encompasses both, yet
is beyond everything.
Calligrapher’s Note
The Diwani style of Arabic calligraphy was chosen to create the artworks of this book. Diwani is a
cursive style and is the most flexible, artistic, and decorative of all the Arabic calligraphy styles. It is
derived from the Riqa and Nasta'liq styles and was developed during the reign of the early Ottoman
Empire (sixteenth to early seventeenth century). It was labeled the Diwani style because it was used in
the Ottoman diwans, or ministries and official departments of the empire, and was one of the secrets of
the sultan’s palace. The rules of this script were not known to everyone, but confined to its masters and
a few bright students. It was used in the writing of all official decrees and resolutions. A sub-style of the
Diwani is called the Jeli Diwani style. The letters in this style are very intertwining, and the diacritical
marks are written in a full and very compact way.
