ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
It's strange finishing something that you have lived and breathed for
years. This dissertation is not really an end though, more of a beginning. This is
what I'm most thankful for, that all of this work is just the beginning of my
education.
I cannot imagine this dissertation without Bill Idsardi. Bill has educated
me and pushed me to educate myself in so many ways. I cannot fully express
my gratitude on paper, so I'm not going to embarrass myself trying. I am
eternally grateful that I have the chance to work with Bill. Irene Vogel has
played a seminal role in my education as a phonologist. She has expanded my
horizons of what I find interesting in phonology and has played the perfect
counterpoint to Bill. Bill Frawiey as a chair and committee member has always
looked out for me as a student in his department and I thank him for that. It has
been truly appreciated. Rolf Noyer completed my dissertation committee and it
has been a joy working with him. His keen eye has sharpened much of this
dissertation and made it all the better. I am disappointed that I had not worked
with him earlier in time.
I am also indebted to many other people here at UD. Peter Cole and Gaby
Hermon have taught me many things about syntax and linguistics in general. I

am very thankful for the time I have spent with them. Other members of the

have made my stay here at Delaware worthwhile. Special thanks go to John
Mathews, Sharon Rose, Charles Reiss, and Suzanne Wash for discussing specific
and general points of the data and analyses contained within this dissertation. I
would also like to thank audiences at the LSA 1999 Annual Meeting, MOT 1998

I have been blessed with many wonderful contemporaries here at
Delaware, all of who have left a mark on me. In particular, Tom Purnell has
