This dissertation examines the observed turnover anomaly in the Thai stock market by attributing the findings to informed trading with asymmetric information and a short sale prohibition. The study develops a theoretical model of security price formation in this environment. Empirical testing of transaction data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand provides results consistent with the model, showing high (low) turnover stocks associate with positive (negative) returns in good (bad) news. A no trade event signals somewhat bad news under short sale prohibition. The speed of price adjustment is also faster for lower prices than higher prices under certain conditions. Overall, the results support that a short sale ban increases market efficiency, especially for bad news, given asymmetric ownership between informed and uninformed traders.
