Preface

This Turkish–English, English–Turkish Disaster Preparedness Glossary is one in a series of glossaries prepared
by McNeil Technologies and Dunwoody Press to aid disaster relief workers in the event of an international
emergency. The approximately 7,300 entries in this glossary address the following subjects: arms control, biology
and biological disasters, chemistry and chemical disasters, disaster management, export control, general disaster
preparedness, medicine, military, natural disasters, nuclear energy and nuclear disasters, protection devices and
measures, radiation and radiological disasters, and verification. The subject categories assigned to each entry is only
meant as a general guide to its usage. For ease of use the glossary is divided into four sections: Turkish-English,
English-Turkish, Turkish-English Subject Index, and English-Turkish Subject Index.

The Turkish equivalents for this glossary were supplied by a team of experts at the Disaster Management
Research Center, Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. The team, headed by Professor Polat
Gülkan, worked from a list of English terms we provided and were asked to supply exact Turkish equivalents. A
number of terms in our original list were deleted because there were no suitable Turkish equivalents. Professor
Gülkan and his team also added the sections on disaster management and natural disasters. These additions greatly
improved this glossary, making it even more useful to a wider audience. The success of this glossary is due to the
skill and scholarship of Professor Gülkan and his talented team. Any shortcomings herein are the responsibility of
McNeil Technologies.

This glossary was compiled from more than fifty sources. The key sources are listed in the Bibliography. Where
available, the website for each source is provided.

McNeil Technologies is privileged to present this glossary to the public and welcome any comments and
suggestions to improve, update, and expand this glossary. As a public service, the glossaries in this series are
available in PDF format on the Dunwoody Press website (dunwoodypress.com). We sincerely hope that no one has
