VOL. VII: POWER REACTORS - (SUPPLEMENT TO VOL. IV)
This volume, which is a continuation of Vol. IV, describes 49 new power reactors in 12 coun
tries. On the date of issue of Vol. VII, both volumes together cover almost all civilian power
reactors in operation, the majority of power reactors under construction and several
at the planning stage in Member States of the IAEA. The reactors are grouped according
to coolant, i.e.: Pressurized-light-water-cooled power reactors; Boiling-light-water-cooled
power reactors; Heavy-water-cooled power reactors; Gas-cooled power reactors; Organic
cooled power reactors; Liquid-metal-cooled power reactors.
For each reactor or reactor type the following data are given: general information and
reactor physics data, diagrams· of the fuel element or fuel-element assembly and of the
horizontal and vertical sections of the reactor, information on the core, fuel element,
core heat transfer, control, fluid flow, reflector and shielding, a description of the vessel,
containment and turbogenerator, a simplified flow diagram, information, when available,
on cost estimates and operating staff, and additional remarks and a short bibliography.
A map of nuclear power reactors in Member States of the IAEA is included at the end
of the book.

INTRODUCTION This, the seventh volume of the IAEA's Directory of Nuclear Reactors, is devoted
to power reactors. It is a continuation of Volume IV, issued in July 1962, and
covers 49 new reactors (at 45 nuclear power stations) in 12 countries. Together
with Volume IV, the present volume covers on its date of issue almost all civilian
power reactors in operation, the majority of power reactors under construction
and several at the planning stage in Member States of the IAEA.
The information is presented in a slightly different way from that in Volume IV
(the number of information items per reactor has been increased from 72 to 84, ·
and more space is given to the pressure vessel, to the primary circuit and to
the turbogenerator unit; 8 pages are devoted to each reactor instead of 6, as
in the previous volumes). Thus the first page of each entry contains general
information and reactor physics data. The second and third pages provide
diagrams of the fuel element or fuel-element assembly and of the horizontal
and vertical sections of the reactor. On the fourth page information is grouped
under the following headings: core, fuel element, core heat transfer; the fifth
page provides information on control, fluid flow, reflector and shielding.
The sixth page contains the description of the vessel, of the containment and of
the turbogenerator. The seventh page shows a simplified flow diagram. The
eighth page gives information on cost estimates and operating staff when this
is available. The description of each reactor is concluded with adc!itional
remarks and a short bibliography. For a reactor of a type already described
in detail elsewhere in the Directory, a suitable cross-reference is made and only
differences and modifications are given. In cases where only partial information
has been received by the Agency, the description of the corresponding reactors
is given in a shorter presentation. A full alphabetical index of power reactors
listed in volumes IV and VII is included.
No attempt has been made to provide the complete details required by specialists
interested in a particular aspect of a reactor project, and the diagrams are
only intended to convey a general picture of the reactor lay-out. The presentation
makes the Directory a useful source of reference and comparison for all workers
in the nuclear field, for libraries, scientific establishments, design offices, etc.
In general, a uniform terminology and system of units have been used, but in
some cases the same units of measurement as those in use on the project con
cerned were retained. At the end of the volume, conversion factors and nomo
grams are given to facilitate the conversion of units.
In the present arrangement, reactors are grouped by coolant with light-water
cooled reactors additionally sub-divided into pressurized and boiling light
water systems. In each category, reactors are listed chronologically (e.g.
according to their date of first criticality), or alphabetically when expected
to go critical in the year of the volume's publication. Every effort has been
made to achieve consistency, but certain differences may still remain since the
figures were obtained from several sources. All data, however, have been
either provided or reviewed by the appropriate authorities in the Member
States concerned.
This volume, which is the result of a co-operative effort between Member States
and the Secretariat of the Agency, was compiled and edited by Dr. G. Rubinstein
of the Agency's Division of Nuclear Power and Reactors. The continued co
operation of Member States is essential for keeping the Directory up-to-date.
The Agency welcomes any comments and suggestions for the improvement
of future editions of this Directory and for other means of disseminating similar
information of nuclear power reactors.
