Originally established by the Government of Kerala as advanced Centre for medical
specialties, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology SCTIMST
metamorphosed into an Institute of National Importance with the status of a University in
1980 under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India by an Act of
Parliament Act 52 of 1980.
The joint culture of medicine and technology that the Institute pioneered more than three
decades ago has come of age and gained unprecedented acceptance in India. Imbued with
an inclination to venture into less-trodden domain, the Institute focuses on patient care of
high quality, technology development of industrial significance and health research
studies of social relevance.
The emphasis is on development of facilities less readily available elsewhere in the
country such as Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Presurgical
evaluation and Surgery of Epilepsy, Microsurgery and Deep Brain Stimulation for
Movement Disorders, New Biomedical Devices and Products, Evaluation of Medical
Devices to Global specifications, New Academic Programs and Global public health
networks.
The Institute has three wings – Hospital, Biomedical Technology Wing and the Achutha
Menon Centre for Health Science Studies. Excellent research and teaching are available
at these centres.
This uniquely poised Institute has dedicated team of Clinicians. Scientists and Engineers
devoted to high quality biomedical research and developing technologies in health care
with emphasis on Cardiovascular and Neurological diseases.

THE COURSE
Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (DOTT) started in the Institute in the year
1992 under the great vision of Dr. Mohandas, the former Director of this Institute.
This course enables the students in the operation and maintenance of a variety of medical
and electronic equipment, which are used in operation theatre for monitoring during
surgery and anaesthesia. The safety of patients depends largely on the reliable and
smooth functioning of these equipments. The course is designed to train candidates in the
operation and maintenance of theatre equipment and hospital pipeline systems.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
A Diploma in Electronics/Instrumentation/Biomedical Engineering with good academic
record.
DURATION
Two calendar years.

COURSE CONTENTS
➢ Basic Anatomy and Physiology of Human Body
➢ Drugs used in Anaesthesia, Basic Pharmacology
➢ Principles of Anaesthesia and Intra Operative care of the patient
➢ Equipments used in Anaesthesia, its basic working principles, uses,
troubleshooting, and maintenance
➢ Monitoring Equipments
➢ Principles and Techniques of Sterilization
➢ Transfusions and Infusions
➢ Medical gases and the Hospital pipeline system including vacuum suction.

OPERATION THEATRE TRAINING – 15 MONTHS
❖ Preparation of Anaesthesia machines, Ventilators, and other equipments used in
Anaesthesia and Monitoring, Electro Caurtery, Operating Microscopes, Operation
Tables and Lights,
❖ Preparation of drugs used intra operatively and the setting up of intravenous
infusion/transfusion.
❖ Sterilization of the equipment used in anaesthesia such as ventilator tubing,
transducer, tracheal intubating equipments, trans esophageal echo-cardiography
probe, fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
❖ Maintenance of theatre equipments, gas and vacuum outlets, theatre lights and
cables etc.
❖ Managerial aspects such as stock maintenance, preparation of indents, and
maintenance of the narcotic drug register etc.
❖ Hospital pipeline systems and gas manifold including compressed air and vaccum
❖ Positioning of patients for epidural, caudal, and para-vertebral blocks.
❖ Positioning of patients (supine, lateral, prone, and park-bench) for various types of
surgery.
❖ Being an active team member during management of emergencies such as cardiac
arrest.

CLINICAL ENGINEERING (SUB SET OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING)TRAINING
FOR 8 MONTHS (4 MONTHS DURING EACH YEAR OF COURSE)
During this period faculty of the Clinical Engineering Division trained me in the
maintenance of theatre equipments, hospital pipeline systems, gas manifolds,
vacuum outlets, theatre lights, and electro cautery.
CENTRAL STERILISATION AND SUPPLY DEPARTMENT- 1 MONTH
Posting under the Nursing Supervisor of this department for training in all aspects
of sterilization of equipments including surgical instruments used in operation
theatre.
