Preface
The concept for Digital Histologywas born out of necessity. The project began
as a series of digitized micrographs to be used in undergraduate histology
courses at Virginia Commonwealth University. From there, it grew into a
laboratory preview for the professional and graduate histology courses.
However, before that transformation was complete, we encountered the
reality of curriculum constraints and were faced with finding an alternative
to traditional microscope laboratories. Initial versions of Digital Histology
were used only for the basic tissue laboratories; however, it evolved very
rapidly into its present form, which comprises a complete, computer-based
histology laboratory.
The CD of Digital Histology consists of more than 700 light and electron
microscopic images, each with superimposable labels and descriptive
legends. The images are grouped into chapters and subchapters consistent
with the traditional presentation of material in a histology course. An
overview section, including original illustrations to clarify concepts, intro-
duces each major topic. For review purposes, images can be viewed in
random sequence, with or without labels and descriptions, and a quiz
accompanies each major topic. Digital Histologyalso includes a “virtual slide”
image, which can be zoomed in and out to simulate the use of a microscope.
Digital Histology is currently used both as a substitute for traditional
microscope laboratories in the medical, dental, pharmacy, and dental
hygiene curricula at Virginia Commonwealth University, and as an ancillary
study aid for students in the graduate and physical therapy histology
courses. We feel Digital Histology fills a unique niche. In this time of decreas-
ing classroom hours in professional curricula, Digital Histology provides an
interactive, annotated, digital atlas of histology images, insuring that each
student can identify microscopic structures even without the aid of an
instructor. Furthermore, it offers a realistic adjunct or alternative to histol-

ogy laboratories at all levels of instruction, obviating the cost of microscopes
and slide collections. The accompanying text, in outline format, follows the
content of the CD and offers a concise reference for the student’s review of
key points.
