‘Thereisnoevidencetosupportthetheorythatdietaryregimescanhelp
children on the autistic spectrum.’
ThisisthecommonreactionofsomanyGPsandspecialistswhenthey
are approached for advice and help with dietary intervention.
So what exactly is evidence? Well, in my dictionary it’s defined as:
‘…indication,sign,clearness,factsinsupportof…informationtendingto
establish the facts…’. Thousands of children and adults on the autistic
spectrumdemonstratespectacularandpermanentchangesoncetheirdiet
isalteredandthoseproblems,onceforgotten,oftenreturnabruptlywhen
thedietisinfringed.Evidenceenoughtothemany,manyparentswhose
childrennowsleepthroughthenight,say‘Mummy’and‘Daddy’forthe
first time and start noticing the world around them.
Inmedicspeak,theymaymeannoscientificevidence;noabundanceof
medical papers on the subject each re-iterating the point. It is, of course,
quiterightandpropertobecautious,andit’struetosaythatthereisn’ta
glut of medical papers on the subject, but why should that be?
Wheredoesmostofthefundingcomefromformedicalresearch?From
commercial enterprises, and what incentive is there for any commercial
companytoprovethatthestaplefoodsoftheWesterndietaredamaging
to our ASD children?
To their immense credit, there are still stoic researchers round the
world, doggedly committed to seeking the answers despite the lack of
funding for their work. Long before most of our children were born,
indeed before AiA was born, a great Norwegian, Dr Karl Reichelt
expounded the theories of opioid excess. With a number of studies
publishedinrespectablemedicaljournalshecollaboratedinanimpressive
five-yeareducationalstudyintotheeffectsofaglutenandcaseinfreediet
on ASD children. More recently, Dr Rosemary Waring at Birmingham
University identified faulty biochemistry which can lead many ASD
suffererstoreactadverselytoawholerangeoffoods,householdchemicals
and drugs.
