Auf einer Dienstreise in den Iran lernt ein deutscher Journalist einen merkwürdigen Mann kennen. Im Dämmerlicht eines Bazars erzählt ihm der Unbekannte die Geschichte seines Lebens: Als junger Arzt mußte er während der Besatzungszeit in Deutschland eine kümmerliche Existenz fristen. Kurz entschlossen nahm er ein Angebot der persischen Regierung an, die Ärzte aus Europa im Iran einsetzen wollte. Das großzügige Gehalt soll es ihm erlauben, die Ansprüche der Frau, die er liebt, zu befriedigen und sie, die es mit der Treue nicht so genau nimmt, von den Männern fernzuhalten. Als er sie freilich in seinem Teheraner Hotel in flagranti mit einem Piloten erwischt, nutzt er eine Gelegenheit, sich zu rächen: Statt die Arbeit in der lieblichen Landschaft nördlich von Teheran anzutreten, tauscht er mit einem Kollegen und geht in die mörderische Salzwüste des persischen Südens. Nach dramatischen Auseinandersetzungen und Abenteuern scheint in dieser unter so unglücklichen Voraussetzungen begonnenen Ehe Harmonie einzukehren - bis ein unerwarteter Schicksalsschlag alles zunichte macht. Horst Biernath, 1905 in Masuren geboren, wurde berühmt durch seinen 1953 erschienenen Roman »Vater sein dagegen sehr« (mit Heinz Rühmann verfilmt). Er ist ein großartiger Erzähler und Fabulierer - immer schon und so auch hier. Die Geschichten, die er erzählt, sind im besten Sinne unterhaltend.
