FOREWORD
The four authors ofthe present work, at the behest ofthe Colloquium on Yemeni
Civilization held in Adenin 1975,undertook to cooperateinmeetingan urgent need
of both students ofancient South Arabianculture and general Semitists, namely the
compilation ofa dictionary ofSabaic. The outlines ofthe plan were described in an
article byA.F.L. Beeston, TheEpigraphie South Arabian Dietionary Projeet (Raydân
l, 1978,p.23-6). The authors have, since 1975,been meeting three times each year,
alternately in Irbid, Louvain, Marburg and Oxford; account has been taken in the
dictionary of ail relevant literature up to the end of 1981, and in a few cases, of
articles published or to be published in 1982.
Publication has been made possible by a generous grant from the University of
Sanaa, together with a grant from the Ford Foundation to the Center for Yemeni
Studies in Sanaa, which have madeit possible to have a selling priee fixed at a figure
considerably below cost; the authors wish to express their gratitude for this.
The authors have not received, and will not receive, any remuneration, but would
like to thank the Fonds National Belge de la Recherche Scientifique, the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaftand Yarmouk Universityfor grants which have contributed
towards their partial reimbursement for travellingexpenses incurred in attending the
thrice-yearly editorial meetings. They are further grateful to cand. phil. Chf.
Schuffert of Marburg, who has kindly assisted in the compilation of the list of

AVANT-PROPOS
À la demande du Colloquium on Yemeni Civilisation tenu à Aden en 1975, les
quatre auteurs du présentouvragesesontengagés à rédigerensembleun dictionnaire
sabéen afin de rencontrer un besoin urgent des étudiants de l'ancienne culture de
l'Arabiedu Sudaussi bien que dessémitisantsen général. Lesgrandeslignesdu projet
ont été exposées dans un article de A.F.L. Beeston, The Epigraphie South Arabian
Dietionary Project, dans Raydân, 1(1978), p. 23-26. Depuis 1975les auteurs se sont
réunis trois fois par an, tour à tour à Irbid (Jordanie), Louvain, Marburg et Oxford.
On a tenucomptede toutes lespublications pertinentes paruesjusqu'à la finde 1981,
ainsi que de certains articles publiés ou à paraître en 1982.
La publicationde l'ouvrageaété renduepossiblegrâceàune généreusesubvention
de l'Université de Sanaa, et à un subside de la Ford Foundation au Centre for
Yemeni Studies à Sanaa. Les auteurs tiennent à exprimer leur vive gratitude à ces
institutions, dont l'intervention a permis de fixer un prix de vente considérablement
inférieur au prix de revient.
Les auteurs n'ont reçu et ne recevront aucune rémunération; ils souhaitent
toutefois exprimer leurs remerciements au Fonds National Belge de la Recherche
Scientifique, à la Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft et à l'Université du Yannouk
pour l'octroi de subventions qui leur ont permis de couvrir une partie des frais de
voyage occasionnés par les séances de travail quadrimestrielles. Ils sont en outre
