Thisbookpresentstheproceedingsofthe8thInternationalConferenceonCollisionandGroundingofShipsand
OffshoreStructuresheldinLisbon,Portugalbetween21and23October2019,underthetheme“Developments
intheCollisionandGroundingofShipsandOffshoreStructures”.
ThehistoryofthisseriesofconferencesonCollisionandGroundingofShipsandOffshoreStructuresstarted
alittlemorethantwentyyearsago,andpreviousconferenceshavebeenheldinSanFrancisco,USAin1996,in
Copenhagen,Denmarkin2001,inTokyo,Japanin2004,inHamburg,Germanyin2007,inHelsinki,Finland
in2010,inTrondheim,Norwayin2013,andinUlsan,SouthKoreain2016.
Participants are drawn from the industrial and academic sectors and are typically naval architects, marine
engineersandscientistsfromallovertheworld,whoatICCGSfindaforumthatprovidesanidealsettingto
shareexperiencesandbeinformedofthestate-of-the-artdevelopmentsinthisareaofexpertise,providingthe
atmosphereformanyfruitfuldiscussions.
Forthefirsttimeinitshistory,theICCGSConferenceisorganizedinLisbon,Portugal,wheretheCentrefor
MarineTechnologyandOceanEngineering(CENTEC),InstitutoSuperiorTécnico(IST),UniversityofLisbon
hastakentheresponsibilityforthelogisticsandorganizationoftheConference.
About90abstractshavebeensubmittedand,afterareviewprocess,47papershavebeenacceptedandincluded
inthisbook.Amongstthetopicscoveredinthisyear’seventarethemostupdatedaspectsanddevelopments
concerningtheanalysisofthecollisionandgroundingofshipsandoffshorestructuresandtheirdesign,namely,
behaviouroflargepassengervesselsincollisionandgrounding,collisionandgroundinginarcticconditions
