TheNationalResourceCenterforTheFirst-YearExperienceand
Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina was
established in 1986 with a small grant from the South Carolina
State Commission on Higher Education. Since its founding, the
National Resource Center has grown into a multifaceted orga-
nization that serves as the trusted expert and internationally
recognized leader for all postsecondary student transitions. The
Center’sscholarshipandadvocacyonbehalfoffirst-yearstudents
and all students in transition has garnered significant worldwide
attention and had an impact on student success initiatives across
theglobe.
Buildingonitshistoryofexcellenceasthefounderandleader
ofthefirst-yearexperiencemovement,theCenter’sstatedmission
is to serve education professionals by supporting and advanc-
ing efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and
through higher education. It achieves this mission by providing
opportunities for the exchange of practical and scholarly infor-
mation, as well as the discussion of trends and issues in this field
throughtheconveningofconferences,institutes,workshops,and
onlinelearningopportunities;publishingbooks,researchreports,
a peer-reviewed journal, electronic newsletters, and guides; gen-
erating, supporting, and disseminating research and scholarship;
hostingvisitingscholars;andmaintainingseveralonlinechannels
for resource sharing and communication, including a dynamic
website,listservs,andsocialmediaoutlets.
Five core commitments serve as the foundation for the Cen-
ter’s work in pursuit of its mission. First, the Center strives
to set a standard for excellence for supporting all students in
transition—first-yearstudents,sophomores,transfers,seniors,and
new graduate students—and facilitating educational success for
a diversity of students in the twenty-first century. Second, the
work of the Center focuses on the connection between research and
practice,therebyadvancingandsupportingbothscholarlypractice
andappliedresearch.Third,ourdedicationtoinclusionmotivates
us to create a supportive and professional environment where

ongoing dialogue on student transitions. Fourth, the National
Resource Center models effective collaboration and aims to cre-

lifelong learners and engage in an ongoing process of inquiry,
exploration,anddiscovery.
