finishesofitsimmediatesurroundingsintheOldTownareaofOlot
inCatalonia.Detailingdemonstratesacomparableausteritythat
positionsthenewinsertionsofbarandfixedseating–described
bythedesignersas‘sculptural’inacknowledgementofthebar’s
secondaryroleasanexhibitionspace–attheextremelimitsof
creaturecomfort.
Thecounter,thewindowseatoppositeitandtheplanesofthelong
free-standingseatingunitarefabricatedfromsteelplates,whichwere
weldedonsite.Weldsweremadewithgreatprecisionsothatthey
donotneedtobegroundsmoothand,likethesteelsheets,retain
theirnaturaltoneandtexture.Theyarestrongenoughtosupport
theseatswhicharecantileveredoffthebackrests.Onlythetabletops
needasmallcantileveredtubesupport,weldedtotheverticalcentre
plates.Thesteelselectedhasadarkbrowntoneanditssurface
texturehasanaffinitywiththepatternsontherenderedwalls.
Thoseswirlingpatternsthemselves,madebytheplasterer’sfloat
onthesandandcementrenderoftheinternalwallshaveavisual
affinitywiththetextureofthestoneinthestreet.Thebluertoneof
thepolishedconcretefloorscreediscomplementedbythesmooth
paintedplasterceilinginwhichrecessedstriplightingfollowsthe
linesofthebarcounterandfixedseating.
Thedefiningelementoftheinterior,however,istheperforated
screenthatlinesthelongerwindowwall.Itsfragilityandemphatic
texturecontrastwiththesmoothersolidityofinternalsurfacesand
furniturepiecesbutitsconstructionshowsthesamedirectnessof
thinkingandmaking.Thescreenswereconstructedinthedesigners’
ownworkshop.Lengthsofsteelwireweretwistedbyhandaround
weldedtubularsteelframes,sothateachpanelisunique.Theyrun
continuouslyalongthelengthoftheroomandfilterlightandviews
tothestreet.Thesun,shiningthroughthepanelsfrommiddayto
theendoftheafternoon,castsstrongpatternsonthesteelsurfaces
andtherearrenderedwall.Thepanelshangfromarailatthe
junctionofceilingandwindowandmaybeslidbyhand,tomake
complex,changingfacades.
