Shortly after Iraq seized Kuwait on August
2, 1990, author Martin Yant argued in a
newspaper column that Saddam Hussein's
"military machine' wasn't nearly the men-
'
ace President Bush said it was. Rather than
being a well-equipped and "battle-
hardened" million-man Wehrmacht at the
commandofanotherAdolfHitler,Yantsug-
gested that the Iraqi army appeared to be
a "war-weary," smaller, supply-short force
atthecommandofanotherManuelNoriega.
When the Persian GulfWar ended the
following February in the U.S.-led coali-
tion's rout of the Iraqi army, Yant set out
towriteDesertMiragetoshowhowtheBush
administration had deliberately deceived
Americans into supporting the pursuit of
powerdisguisedasthepursuitofprinciple
at a cost ofan estimated 375,000 lives.
In the process, the author shows how
the "liberation" of Kuwait, whose occupa-
tiontheBushadministrationhelpedcause
—
either by ineptness or design was merely
a pretense for the assertion of American
power in the Mideast.
To achieve this the administration
waged a war of deception in which truth
was not only its first casualty but its last
concern,asthenewsmediawerefirstmisled,
then intimidated, and finally co-opted.
Obscured along the way, Yant says, were:

possibly with secret American support,
