Th is is the fourteenth volume in a series of translations of Th e Or-
atory of Classical Greece. Th e aim of the series is to make available
primarily for those who do not read Greek up-to-date, accurate,
and readable translations with introductions and explanatory
notes of all the surviving works and major fragments of the At-
tic orators of the classical period (ca. 420– 320 bc): Aeschines, An-
docides, Antiphon, Demosthenes, Dinarchus, Hyperides, Isaeus,
Isocrates, Lycurgus, and Lysias. Th is volume contains sixteen
speeches, two of them almost certainly not by Demosthenes, that
were purportedly written for delivery in the assembly, together
with a letter from Philip of Macedon that is traditionally included
among the speeches of Demosthenes. Th ey include the highly po-
lemical Olynthiacs and Philippics and other speeches that pro-
vide considerable information about Athenian politics and public
fi nance in the middle of the fourth century.
Th is volume, like the others in the series, has benefi ted greatly
from the careful attention of many at the University of Texas Press,
including Director Joanna Hitchcock, Humanities Editor Jim
Burr, manuscript editor Lynne Chapman, and copy editor Nancy
