<span>Buku ini bermula dari orasi ilmiah Goenawan Mohamad dalam acara Nurcholish MadjidMemorial Lecture (NMML) 23 Oktober 2008 di Universitas Paramadina berjudul “Demokrasi dan Disilusi”.<br><br>Dalam ceramah itu, GM melancarkan kritik tajam terhadap kondisi politik Indonesia, khususnya pada sistem demokrasi yang kita anut: demokrasi parlementer, partai-partai politik dan pemilihan umum. Alih-alih bicara hal-hal yang tehnis dan prosedural untuk menampik kekecewaan: bagaimana menggelar pemilu yang jujur dan adil, menciptakan pemerintahan yang bersih, transparansi anggaran dan lain-lain, GM justeru meletakkan politik dan demokrasi dalam percakapan filsafat politik kontemporer.<br><br>Untuk menangkis kekecewaan atau disilusi terhadap demokrasi GM mengusulkan untuk menempuh “satu-satunya jalan yang masih terbuka adalah selalu dengan setia mengembalikan politik sebagai perjuangan”. Meskipun diterpa kekecewaan, GM tak hendak menampik demokrasi, karena alternatifnya anarkisme atau terorisme Al-Qaedah. Ia hanya menegaskan perlunya kita memperkuat sisi “perjuangan” di dalam demokrasi dan politik.<br><br>Ihsan Ali-Fauzi sebagai penanggungjawab Nurcholish Madjid Memorial Lecture menyambut kritik GM tersebut dan membuat tradisi keilmuan yang sangat baik: ceramah GM dijadikan polemik dengan mengundang komentar dan tanggapan dari tokoh dan penulis seperti R. William Liddle, Rocky Gerung, Rizal Panggabean, Dodi Ambardi, Ihsan Ali-Fauzi dan Robertus Robet.</span>
