NationalAlumniAssociationandforagreeingtobecomeitsPresidentfor

lifeoftheuniversity?
Asmanywhoreadthispublicationwillknow,thispastsummerwasourfirstexperiencehostingatraininginstituteforTeachForAmerica.
Foreightweekswehadmorethan800newcorpsmembersandstaffonourcampus.Thecorpsmembersarerecentcollegegraduatesfrom
institutionsacrosstheUnitedStateswhohaveagreedtospendtwoyearsteachinginsomeofthenation'smostchallengedK-12schools.
Theyarecommittedtotheprinciplethateachchildhastherighttoagoodeducation.
WecompetedtohostthisSummerInstitute,theeighthsiteforTeachForAmerica.Theotherprogramsarelocatedonmajoruniversity-
campusesinAtlanta,Chicago,Houston,LosAngeles,NewYork,Philadelphia,andPhoenix.Thus,webecamethefirstruralsite,and
Cleveland,Missi.ssippi,respondedwonderfullyHundredsofvolunteersfromthecommunityhelpedcampuspersonnelwithoneeventafter
another,andtheinstitutewasarousingsuccess.Ofcourse,thisisatremendouslyimportantprogramnotonlyforDeltaStateandCleveland,
butespeciallyfortheschoolsoftheMississippiDelta.

ShumateParkhasnowblossomedintoafull-fledgedDeltatradition.Homecoming201 hasbeensetfor
theweekendofOctober15-16,andIdohopethatallofouralumniandfriendswillmakeaspecialeffort
tocomebacktocampustotakepartinthemany,manyactivitiesplannedfortheweekend.Highlights
