This document describes a study that developed and tested various deep learning models to classify electronic health records (EHR) notes as related or not related to diabetes. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model achieved the highest accuracy, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.975 on test notes from one hospital, and an AUC of 0.875 when validated on notes from a separate hospital. Recurrent neural networks were not as effective at the binary classification task compared to the CNN model. The CNN approach can accurately and reliably identify diabetes-related notes across different clinical datasets.
