Preface
The creation of this book stemmed from my passion for Medical Aesthetics – not just the practice of it,
but also teaching and developing new and better treatment protocols for our patients.
Healthcare professionals in our speciality are often faced with a presenting complaint that may seem
straightforward to treat but lend itself to more than one treatment option. To achieve and deliver natural-
looking results, certain proportions of the face must be respected, as well as having a good understanding
of the root cause of the complaint and sharing that knowledge with patients. This book has been struc-
tured in such a way that we can focus on one area of the face in turn, to help readers gain insight into that
specific anatomical region.
In a booming and ever-expanding industry, it is crucial that healthcare professionals have a good
understanding of various treatment modalities. From my personal experience, I find that combinations of
various types of treatments often work better than a stand-alone treatment. Hence, it is a great pleasure
to be able to share my experience and suggestions in various sections of this book.
As facial aesthetics has multiple facets, I would not have been able to provide a comprehensive over-
view without having the honour to have contributions from several esteemed co-authors of various
backgrounds. To provide the best care for our patients, we must understand the limitations of Medical
Aesthetics; some patients are better suited for surgical procedures and I am glad that we have been able
to include the synergy and differences between surgical and non-surgical approaches to facial aesthetics.
Facial aesthetics has progressed from ‘wrinkle chasing’ to a more holistic approach. In these modern
times, our speciality is no longer aimed at mature women as it once was. Furthermore, I am proud to be
able to celebrate the diversity in this book by including case studies of patients of different ages, ethnici-
ties, genders, and sexualities.
The aim of this book is to help and guide healthcare professionals in making the best and most appro-
priate decisions for their patients. I hope that you find this book useful in helping you select the right
treatments for the right patients in your own practice.
