Foreword
Linda Goldman
Young people in today’s world experience a myriad of circumstances involving
loss and grief. Children are inundated with death and dying topics, not only per-
sonally, but vicariously through modern technology that instantly portrays graphic
sounds and images on these issues. So often adults feel ill equipped to create a con-
versation with young children and teens about the death of a mom or a favorite pet.
Parents and professionals may believe they are incapable of providing a meaningful
dialogue when a “teachable moment” arises on TV or in the movies.
Constructing an annotated bibliography for youth K–12 on death, loss, and grief
is a monumental feat, one that Alice Crosetto and Rajinder Garcha have succeeded
in accomplishing in a thorough and informative way. This book serves as an in-
strument to help open communication between girls and boys and the adult world.
Death, Loss, and Grief in Literature for Youth is an essential tool for helping
our bereaved young people. It offers a voice for the child who may feel that no
one understands, the child who feels isolated in grief, and for the child who feels
that there is nowhere to turn. By providing words to use for challenging and
often excruciating life-changing events, this age-appropriate literature can be
paramount for a safe and comforting grief journey.
Many of us may have wished for books that offered help, understanding, and
support with various loss and grief issues when we were growing up. Few were
available. Now we have been given this resource to help us as adults guide our
children through the difficult path of grief toward their healing.
Linda Goldman is the author of Life and Loss: A Guide to Help Grieving Chil-
dren, 3rd Edition (in-press 2013), Children Also Grieve: Talking to Children
about Death and Healing (2005), Raising Our Children to Be Resilient: A Guide
to Help Children with Traumatic Grief (2005), and Great Answers to Difficult
Questions about Death: What Children Need to Know (2009).
