Dating ofthe "Proceedings ofthe Hawaiian
Entomological Sodety"(1906-1993)

ABSTRACT.Thispapergivesdetailsanddalesoftheprinting,mailing,andissueofthe
issuesandvolumesofthePmceedingsoftheHawaiianEntomologicalSocietyfrom1906
to 1993,inclusive. Somedatingevidence necessitates different yearsofpublication for
someoftheissues,whichmayresultinchangesinpreviouslyrecognizedpriorityoforig
inalpublicationoflaxonomicnames.
The Proceedings ofthe Hawaiian EntomologicalSociety has been one ofthemost
importantjournalsofentomologysinceits inceptionin 1906. Manycasesofinsectintro
ductionandcontrol areoutlinedand many newtaxa havebeendescribedonitspages.In
creating databases ofboth DipteraofAustralasia and Oceania and the terrestrial arthro
pods of Hawaii, many anomalies of publication of the Pmceedings have come to the
attentionofthisauthor.Anattempt wasmadetoascertaincorrectdatesofpublicationfor
thoseissues thatonly have the month printedontheissueorvolumecoverbyobtaining
datesofreceiptat various librariesinandaround Honolulu. Duringapreviousexercisein
obtaining dates forjournals (Evenhuis ctal. 1989), it wasdiscovered thatsomelibraries
were inconsistent in stamping dates ofreceipt onjournals they received (orcompletely
failed to do so in some cases), thereby making dating ofthosejournalsjust that much
moredifficult.AfterobtainingasmanyreceiptdatesforthePmceedingsaspossiblefrom
libraries and personal sets, I consulted the archival material of the Hawaiian Ento
mologicalSocietydepositedintheBishopMuseumArchivesandLibrary. Evidencethere
ofprinting dates, mailing dates by the Society, and receipt datesofissues sent from the
printergivethebest evidence insupportofthedating ofthe various issues and volumes
ofthePmceedingsoutlinedbelowinTable3andcorroboratelibraryreceiptdatesasbeing
theearliestactual daleofpublication insomecases.
Anumberofdifferent printers were used forthe Proceedings (Table 1). Whoprint
edwhatissueplaysaveryimportantpart indeterminingactualpublicationdates.Fortwo
issues in volume 1 ofthe Proceedings, the printer, Spahr&Glenn,was located inOhio.
Thisresultedina ratherlong periodoftimebetweenthefinishingofprintingofanissue
andthedateofreceiptoftheshipmentatthedocksinHonolulu(and,infact,wastherea
sontheSocietydecided to go with a printer more close tohomeinsubsequentissues).
Volume 1, issue2istheDecemberissueofthePmceedingsfor 1906andcarriesthedate
"1 December 1906".This is, in fact, notthe publicationdateoftheissue, butthedateof
printing.Afterprinting,completedcopiesfordistributionofthatparticularissueweresent

in December by train from Ohio to Honolulu. The train with the Proceedingsarrived in
SanFranciscoon 1 January 1907.ThecopiesoftheProceedingswerethen loadedontoa
Matson ship, which arrived in Honolulu on 17 January 1907. Thus, thedateofpublica
tioncannotbeanyearlierthan 17January 1907,whichchangestheyearofpublicationfor
allnewtaxadescribedinthatissue.Conversely,printerswithinthecityinsomecasesfin
ishedprintingan issuethedaybeforeit wasstampedasreceived bya local library.

Thedatesofpublicationprimedin someoftheissuescannotalwaysbe takenasthe
actualdateofpublication foranumberofreasons.Often,theissuesweresenttotheedi
toroftheProceedings(forlistofeditors,seeTable2)orthesecretaryoftheSocietywho,
insomecaseswereonvacation,outoftownonbusiness,orinthefieldforextendedperi
ods of time. In these cases, after their arrival, the packages of Proceedings would sit
awaitingsomeone to open them up and distribute them, which might have been months
afterthedateprinted intheissue.Inothercases,issuesoftheProceedingswerestamped
asreceivedbylibrariesearlierthantheprinteddateintheissue.Itisforthesereasonsthat
readersshould takecaution whencitingactualdatesofpublicationoftheProceedings. I
proposethatthedatesgiveninTable3betakenasthemostaccuratedatesofpublication
fortheProceedingsuntil such timeas furtherevidenceupdates this list.
