Preface
Data engineering and data management practices are key for digital libraries,
knowledgemanagementandMulselmedia.Manyresearcheffortshavebeenmade
in related areas. Recent advances in computing, networking, storage, and infor-
mation technology have enabled the collection and distribution of vast amounts
of data including multimedia and mulsemedia in a variety of applications such
as education, culture, digital government, data security, and health.
The proliferationofmultimedia dataandits richsemanticsfromtheseappli-
cations have created the need for advanced data engineering and management
functionalities for in-depth data processing,analysis,indexing, learning,search-
ing, retrieval, mining and management. Our International Conference on Data
Engineering and Management (ICDEM) series addresses these research issues
annually.
The Second ICDEM was held during July 29–31,2010 at Bishop Heber Col-
lege (Autonomous) in Tiruchirappalli, India. The conference program included
research contributions, tutorials, keynote talks, and a co-located Workshop on
Data Mining with Graphs and Matrices (WDGM 2010).
The keynote talks were offered by Shailly Goyal (TCS, India) on “Semantic
Information Retrieval from Enterprise Data” and by George Ghinea (Brunel
University, UK) on What About Mulsemedia—Challenges and Opportunities?”
The sponsoring organization and the Organizing Committee deserve praise
forthesupporttheyprovided.Anumberofindividualscontributedtothesuccess
