In letzter Not setzt Kemp alles auf einen Karte und macht sich daran, eine Idee zu verwirklichen, die so unfaßbar wie undurchführbar anmutet: Er organisiert ein Schiff, das in Afrika Sklaven laden und sie in Westindien gegen Zucker eintauschen soll. Den Zucker würde Kemp in England teuer verkaufen. Doch es kommt anders: Der Arzt des Sklavenschiffs und einige andere aufrechte Weiße ergreifen Partei für die 200 eingekerkerten schwarzen Sklaven …
