Es existiert eine Zweiklassengesellschaft, die nach IQ selektiert ist: Nur ein paar hochintelligente Ingenieure haben noch Arbeit, aber auch deren Jobs werden nach und nach wegrationalisiert.</span><br><span>Der Hauptprotagonist, Dr. Paul Proteus, gerät durch Zufall in Kontakt mit einer Geheimorganisation, die sich die Zerstörung der Maschinen und Rückkehr der Menschen zu sinnvoller und produktiver Tätigkeit zum Ziel gesetzt hat. Eines Tages bricht in einigen Städten der Aufruhr los...</span><br><span>Das Werk ist in Deutschland eher unbekannt, was bedauerlich ist, denn es steht durchaus in einer Reihe mit anderen bekannten Dystopien (s.o.). Die Sprache ist eher schlicht und es dauert auch einige Zeit, bis man versteht, wie diese Gesellschaft funktioniert, aber das Ende - das hier nicht verraten werden soll - ist intensiv und erschütternd.</span>
