I beg permission to mention by name only four people who have given
me the most affection, appreciation, encouragement, and constant
collaboration. The first of the four is a brilliant psychotherapist; the
second is a loyal friend and companion; the third is the mother of my
children, Ethan and Jessica, and the grandmother of Louisa, Simon,
Amelia, Frankie, and Oliver; and the fourth is as fine a homemaker and
cook as ever performed miracles in a domestic kitchen. And their names
are Amy Simon Skerry.

In my book on the shower scene in Psycho, I listed my acknowledgments
like film credits, with above- and below-the-line collaborators. I should like
to continue that process in this space.

Carroll, Martin Bojowald, Uri Hasson, and Charlie Rose. Without their contri-
butions, I wouldn’t have had a book. Thanks also to my very patient editor,
Katie Gallof, who tolerated my requests for deadline extensions and gave
me much needed encouragement. David Barker, the editor for my Psycho
book, heard my pitch for the dark energy idea and helped me to formulate
