3111 We live in a world of global food. The daily meals of people in both the devel-
4 oped and developing worlds are being transformed by the increasing ease
5 by which food is being traded across continents. Affluent consumers’ super-
6 market trolleys are being filled with an array of food products from develop-
7 ing countries while, at the same time, food exports from the developed world
8 are supplanting and transforming dietary systems in developing countries.
9 Some experts suggest that the enhanced tradability of food ushers in an era
20111 of increasing choice and affluence. Others point to problems of dependency,
1 inequality and social dislocation accompanying these developments.
2 Cross-continental Food Chains represents a collective effort to document and
3 understand these issues. Containing the contributions of 21 leading inter-
4 national social scientists from 10 countries, the book presents recent case
5 study research on how and why the food system is being globalized, and
6 what this means for people and communities in different parts of the world.
7 The book covers debates on new structures and dynamics in the global trade
8 with food products, including detailed accounts of fresh horticulture, tropical
9 crops and livestock.
30111 This book fills a major gap in contemporary scholarship on food and global-
1 ization. Its emphasis on case study accounts of the connections between trade
2 and restructuring provides texture and context to these complex and import-
3 ant debates. Written and researched at a time in which national governments
4 are seeking to negotiate new rules of global agricultural trade, this book is
5 timely and relevant. It will interest researchers in geography, development
6 studies, agricultural economics and political science, as well as professionals
7 in the fields of trade and food policy.
