Alla fine della sua vita, per «ridare voce a quelli sommersi dalla morte», Mengo le trascriverà una per una, a Villa Adriatica, la casa di riposo dove viene ricoverato. Fino all'alba del 21 luglio 1969, quando Neil Armstrong e Edwin Aldrin sbarcano sulla luna, e lui termina di scrivere l'ultima lettera.
