This book presents contributions to the International Conference Critical Thinking
intheSustainableRehabilitationandRiskManagementoftheBuiltEnvironment—
CRIT-RE-BUILT that took place in Iași, Romania, on 7–9 November 2019. It
attractedparticipantsfrommanycountriesacrossfourcontinents:Albania,Austria,
Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain
(Europe),Indonesia,Jordan,Nepal,Thailand,Vietnam(Asia),CostaRica,Mexico
(North America), Morocco, South Africa (Africa).
During the conference, lively and fruitful discussions carried on sustainable
rehabilitation of the built environment reminded me of the good old times I spent
with dear colleagues far away: Prof. Wei Wu at BOKU, Vienna; Prof. Chavdar
Kolev at the Higher School of Transport Sofia; Prof. Dashnor Hoxha at the
University of Orléans; Prof. Paolo Simonini and Prof. Simonetta Cola at the

built environment enabling us to see the angles before making judgements on its

The book sets up eight chapters in relationship with sustainable rehabilitation
and risk in the built environment. Most of the authors are old-established or new
partners of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services, “Gheorghe
Asachi” Technical University of Iași, Romania, the conference host. They wit-
nessed skills which cover a broad palette of competences: observations, analysis,
interpretation, reflection, evaluation, explanation, problem-solving,
decision-making, etc. Each chapter starts with a broad state-of-the-art presentation
comprising the latest ideas and methods in the field assessing and asserting the
synthesized and evaluated levels of research, development and novelty through a
critical thinking process. The distinct groups of authors of the eight initiatory
presentations are partners under the framework of the RE-BUILT project. The
papersshowthecriticalthinkingontopicswhichmirrorthebreathofthe fieldand
the importance of sustainable rehabilitation and risk management of the built
environment in fundamental and applied research.
Going through one chapter or another, the authors invite the reader to look
critically at how hazards could affect the built environment revealing that the built
environment is more than the sum of its infrastructure, vulnerable areas or
brownfields. Nature’s transfer of surface, material, function, structure and process

throughthechangeofscaleorrangeofconditionsleadstonewbuildingmaterials,
elements and structures. Using smart materials which can react to environmental
conditionsintosmartcities alreadybecamecommoninthebuildingindustry.New
buildingsriseupontheoldones,sothatoldbrickscarrywiththemthememoriesof
how the city looked like before. The papers should allow the reader to catch a
glimpse of these former areas in the angle of a street, gate, old façade or
long-standing bridge.

the inside of the built environment topic walking around in it as long as it is a
re-emergent subject that never ends its actuality and a path of human endeavour.
