Introduction to the Learning System
This comprehensive training course will provide chapters, members, and the supply chain
community of professionals with information and tools to master the Certified in Production
and Inventory Management (CPIM) body of knowledge. It is the only single resource
available that is designed specifically to help candidates pass the exam.
The APICS CPIM Learning System combines reading materials with online practice
components. Self-directed learners can feel confident studying on their own. For those who
prefer to learn in a more structured group environment, instructor materials are available to
lead courses, which vary in length depending on the instructor’s approach and agenda.
Please see the Timing and Agenda section for more information on this topic. In addition to
exam preparation, the APICS CSCP Learning System is an excellent professional
development tool.

Sugg ested Timings and A gendas: FAQs
Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below before reviewing the High-Level Course
Timing and Suggested Agendas on the next few pages.
How are the suggested timings calculated?
Suggested timings are calculated using an average time-per-slide calculation of roughly 19 slides-per-hour.
This includes needing less time for some slides, and more time for others (hence an average rate). The
timings in the suggested agendas do not include any additional in-class activities that instructors may wish
to include in their syllabus aside from the final review session.
This final session includes time for an optional in-class paper-and-pencil practice exam (available only in
instructor-led courses) as well as review time for discussing the exam, or any topics the students would
like to review. These timings can be adapted depending on your chosen agenda and classroom approach.
Do I need to use all of the slides?
Instructors are not required to use all of the slides included in the Instructor Kit materials. Depending on
your class, as well as your teaching style or chosen agenda, you may wish to spend less time on some
subjects, and more time on others. You may also wish to forgo using the slides for one topic in lieu of doing
an in-class activity. Our suggested agendas and timings are simply to be used as a guideline when
preparing your courses, the baseline of which is the core deck of slides.
Are these the only suggested agendas?
Our suggested agendas and timings are to be used as guidelines when preparing your courses. As noted
above, the course timings for the 3-hour and full day agendas are simply based on an average timing-per-
slide for the core PowerPoint decks. You are free to remove some sections and replace them with activities
in order to stay within the same timing guidelines. You could also use all of the slides and add multiple
activities and have a course that runs longer.
Our “flipped classroom” agenda is simply one idea for an alternative approach to the materials—in this
agenda, we suggest reducing your slides to 20 slides per session, and incorporating 1 activity per-session
and running a course that is 1 to 1.5 hours long. By focusing on activities and pain-points, your sessions
can be more focused while reducing in-class time and providing value to students through deep-dives into
the content. The possibilities for possible agendas are endless!
If I want to do additional activities, how long they will take?
Many of the activity components in the Learning System are available online, so you can have students
complete the work outside of class. If you wish to also go through the activities in-class, we will provide
downloadable worksheets for you to use which will include suggested timings. You are also free to add
your own activities to the classroom! The Instructor Development Community is a great resource for
sharing your agendas, activities, and ideas with other instructors.
