La traduzione interlinguistica e intersemiotica 
III anno

centro, forse ancor più dell'autore. A lui si chiede (…) di dominare non una lingua, ma tutto ciò
che sta dietro una lingua, vale a dire un'intera cultura, un intero mondo, un intero modo di
vedere il mondo (…) trasferendo ogni sfumatura, registro, accento, allusione, tonalità entro i
nuovi confini. Gli si chiede infine di condurre a termine questa improba e tuttavia appassionata
operazione senza farsi notare, senza mai salire sul podio o a cavallo. Gli si chiede di
considerare suo massimo trionfo il fatto che il lettore neppure si accorga di lui.”

Obiettivi del corso 
Gli obiettivi fondamentali del presente corso di traduzione interlinguistica e 
intersemiotica sono i seguenti: introdurre gli studenti alla traduzione letteraria, 
attraverso esercitazioni su capolavori della letteratura anglo‐americana; esercitare 
la scrittura nella lingua italiana, tenendo conto di elementi di storia della lingua, 
stile, registri espressivi; introdurre gli studenti alla traduzione intersemiotica, 
attraverso confronti fra testi letterari e versioni cinematografiche delle opere 
trattate (anche con esempi di lavori individuali e di gruppo già realizzati); individuare 
e discutere le diverse problematiche che rendono difficile e delicato il compito del 
traduttore; affrontare il rapporto fra studi accademici e professione, con particolare 
riferimento all’ambito editoriale. 

Modalità d’esame 
L’esame consiste nella realizzazione di un video di circa 10 minuti riguardante una 
delle opere trattate durante il corso, oppure su altre a scelta degli studenti. I  criteri 
di valutazione sono i seguenti: 
1
a) Approfondimento critico del testo letterario, ovvero delle tematiche principali 
contenute nell’opera; 
b) Analisi dell’adattamento e della sceneggiatura cinematografica, sia nella versione 
originale che nella traduzione italiana; 
c)  Chiarezza espositiva; dizione; montaggio del video. 

Ricevimento studenti: lunedì, mercoledì, giovedì e venerdì alla fine delle lezioni

1‐ From Robinson Crusoe (1719)  by Daniel Defoe (1660‐1731) 
CHAPTER I ‐ I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my 
father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull. He got a good estate by merchandise, and 
leaving off his trade, lived afterwards at York, from whence he had married my mother, whose relations 
were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson 
Kreutznaer; but, by the usual corruption of words in England, we are now called ‐ nay we call ourselves and 
write our name ‐ Crusoe; and so my companions always called me. 

I had two elder brothers, one of whom was lieutenant‐colonel to an English regiment of foot in Flanders, 
formerly commanded by the famous Colonel Lockhart, and was killed at the battle near Dunkirk against the 
Spaniards. What became of my second brother I never knew, any more than my father or mother knew 
what became of me. 

Being the third son of the family and not bred to any trade, my head began to be filled very early with 
rambling thoughts. My father, who was very ancient, had given me a competent share of learning, as far as 
house‐education and a country free school generally go, and designed me for the law; but I would be 
satisfied with nothing but going to sea; and my inclination to this led me so strongly against the will, nay, 
the commands of my father, and against all the entreaties and persuasions of my mother and other friends, 
that there seemed to be something fatal in that propensity of nature, tending directly to the life of misery 
which was to befall me. 

My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my 
design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated 
very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering 
inclination, I had for leaving father's house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and 
had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told 
me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went 
abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature 
out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine 
was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long 
experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the 
miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed 
with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind. He told me I might judge of the 
happiness of this state by this one thing ‐ viz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied; 
that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequence of being born to great things, and wished 
they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and the great; that the wise 
man gave his testimony to this, as the standard of felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty nor 
riches. 

He bade me observe it, and I should always find that the calamities of life were shared among the upper 
and lower part of mankind, but that the middle station had the fewest disasters, and was not exposed to so 
many vicissitudes as the higher or lower part of mankind; nay, they were not subjected to so many 
distempers and uneasinesses, either of body or mind, as those were who, by vicious living, luxury, and 
extravagances on the one hand, or by hard labour, want of necessaries, and mean or insufficient diet on 
the other hand, bring distemper upon themselves by the natural consequences of their way of living; that

the middle station of life was calculated for all kind of virtue and all kind of enjoyments; that peace and 
plenty were the handmaids of a middle fortune; that temperance, moderation, quietness, health, society, 
all agreeable diversions, and all desirable pleasures, were the blessings attending the middle station of life; 
that this way men went silently and smoothly through the world, and comfortably out of it, not 
embarrassed with the labours of the hands or of the head, not sold to a life of slavery for daily bread, nor 
harassed with perplexed circumstances, which rob the soul of peace and the body of rest, nor enraged with 
the passion of envy, or the secret burning lust of ambition for great things; but, in easy circumstances, 
sliding gently through the world, and sensibly tasting the sweets of living, without the bitter; feeling that 
they are happy, and learning by every day's experience to know it more sensibly. 

 Evil vs Good 
I now began to consider seriously my condition, and the circumstances I was reduced to; and I drew up the 
state of my affairs in writing, not so much to leave them to any that were to come after me ‐ for I was likely 
to have but few heirs ‐ as to deliver my thoughts from daily poring over them, and afflicting my mind; and 
as my reason began now to master my despondency, I began to comfort myself as well as I could, and to 
set the good against the evil, that I might have something to distinguish my case from worse; and I stated 
very impartially, like debtor and creditor, the comforts I enjoyed against the miseries I suffered, thus:‐ 
Evil: I am cast upon a horrible, desolate island, void of all hope of recovery. 
Good: But I am alive; and not drowned, as all my ship's company were. 
Evil: I am singled out and separated, as it were, from all the world, to be miserable. 
Good: But I am singled out, too, from all the ship's crew, to be spared from death; and He that miraculously 
saved me from death can deliver me from this condition. 
Evil: I am divided from mankind ‐ a solitaire; one banished from human society. 
Good: But I am not starved, and perishing on a barren place, affording no sustenance. 
Evil: I have no clothes to cover me. 
Good: But I am in a hot climate, where, if I had clothes, I could hardly wear them. 
Evil: I am without any defence, or means to resist any violence of man or beast. 
Good: But I am cast on an island where I see no wild beasts to hurt me, as I saw on the coast of Africa; and 
what if I had been shipwrecked there? 
Evil: I have no soul to speak to or relieve me. 
Good: But God wonderfully sent the ship in near enough to the shore, that I have got out as many 
necessary things as will either supply my wants or enable me to supply myself, even as long as I live. 
Upon the whole, here was an undoubted testimony that there was scarce any condition in the world so 
miserable but there was something negative or something positive to be thankful for in it; and let this 
stand as a direction from the experience of the most miserable of all conditions in this world: that we may 
always find in it something to comfort ourselves from, and to set, in the description of good and evil, on 
the credit side of the account. 
Having now brought my mind a little to relish my condition, and given over looking out to sea, to see if I 
could spy a ship ‐ I say, giving over these things, I begun to apply myself to arrange my way of living, and to 
make things as easy to me as I could.

2 ‐ Gulliver’s Travels (1721‐25) by Jonathan Swift (1667‐1745) 
Part II: A Voyage to Brobdingnag 
The queen became so fond of my company, that she could not dine without me. I had a table 
placed upon the same at which her majesty ate, just at her left elbow, and a chair to sit on. 
Glumdalclitch stood on a stool on the floor near my table, to assist and take care of me. I had an 
entire set of silver dishes and plates, and other necessaries, which, in proportion to those of the 
queen, were not much bigger than what I have seen in a London toy‐shop for the furniture of a 
baby‐house: these my little nurse kept in her pocket in a silver box, and gave me at meals as I 
wanted them, always cleaning them herself. No person dined with the queen but the two 
princesses royal, the eldest sixteen years old, and the younger at that time thirteen and a month. 
Her majesty used to put a bit of meat upon one of my dishes, out of which I carved for myself, and 
her diversion was to see me eat in miniature: for the queen (who had indeed but a weak stomach) 
took up, at one mouthful, as much as a dozen English farmers could eat at a meal, which to me 
was for some time a very nauseous sight. She would craunch the wing of a lark, bones and all, 
between her teeth, although it were nine times as large as that of a full‐grown turkey; and put a 
bit of bread into her mouth as big as two twelve‐ penny loaves (...)  

It is the custom, that every Wednesday (which, as I have observed, is their Sabbath) the king and 
queen, with the royal issue of both sexes, dine together in the apartment of his majesty, to whom 
I was now become a great favourite; and at these times, my little chair and table were placed at 
his left hand, before one of the salt‐ cellars. This prince took a pleasure in conversing with me, 
inquiring into the manners, religion, laws, government, and learning of Europe; wherein I gave him 
the best account I was able. His apprehension was so clear, and his judgment so exact, that he 
made very wise reflections and observations upon all I said. But I confess, that, after I had been a 
little too copious in talking of my own beloved country, of our trade and wars by sea and land, of 
our schisms in religion, and parties in the state; the prejudices of his education prevailed so far, 
that he could not forbear taking me up in his right hand, and stroking me gently with the other, 
after a hearty fit of laughing, asked me, "whether I was a whig or tory?" Then turning to his first 
minister, who waited behind him with a white staff, near as tall as the mainmast of the Royal 
Sovereign, he observed "how contemptible a thing was human grandeur, which could be 
mimicked by such diminutive insects as I: and yet," says he, "I dare engage these creatures have 
their titles and distinctions of honour; they contrive little nests and burrows, that they call houses 
and cities; they make a figure in dress and equipage; they love, they fight, they dispute, they 
cheat, they betray!" And thus he continued on, while my colour came and went several times, 
with indignation, to hear our noble country, the mistress of arts and arms, the scourge of France, 
the arbitress of Europe, the seat of virtue, piety, honour, and truth, the pride and envy of the 
world, so contemptuously treated. 

But as I was not in a condition to resent injuries, so upon mature thoughts I began to doubt 
whether I was injured or no. For, after having been accustomed several months to the sight and 
converse of this people, and observed every object upon which I cast mine eyes to be of 
proportionable magnitude, the horror I had at first conceived from their bulk and aspect was so 
far worn off, that if I had then beheld a company of English lords and ladies in their finery and 
birth‐day clothes, acting their several parts in the most courtly manner of strutting, and bowing, 
and prating, to say the truth, I should have been strongly tempted to laugh as much at them as the 
king and his grandees did at me.

Part IV: A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms 
Chapter III 
[The author studies to learn the language. The Houyhnhnm, his master, assists in teaching him. 
The language described. Several Houyhnhnms of quality come out of curiosity to see the author. 
He gives his master a short account of his voyage.] 
My principal endeavour was to learn the language, which my master (for so I shall henceforth call 
him), and his children, and every servant of his house, were desirous to teach me; for they looked 
upon it as a prodigy, that a brute animal should discover such marks of a rational creature. I 
pointed to everything, and inquired the name of it, which I wrote down in my journal‐book when I 
was alone, and corrected my bad accent by desiring those of the family to pronounce it often. In 
this employment, a sorrel nag, one of the under‐servants, was very ready to assist me. 
In speaking, they pronounced through the nose and throat, and their language approaches nearest 
to the High‐Dutch, or German, of any I know in Europe; but is much more graceful and significant. 
The emperor Charles V. made almost the same observation, when he said "that if he were to 
speak to his horse, it should be in High‐ Dutch." 
The curiosity and impatience of my master were so great, that he spent many hours of his leisure 
to instruct me. He was convinced (as he afterwards told me) that I must be a Yahoo; but my 
teachableness, civility, and cleanliness, astonished him; which were qualities altogether opposite 
to those animals. He was most perplexed about my clothes, reasoning sometimes with himself, 
whether they were a part of my body: for I never pulled them off till the family were asleep, and 
got them on before they waked in the morning. My master was eager to learn "whence I came; 
how I acquired those appearances of reason, which I discovered in all my actions; and to know my 
story from my own mouth, which he hoped he should soon do by the great proficiency I made in 
learning and pronouncing their words and sentences." To help my memory, I formed all I learned 
into the English alphabet, and writ the words down, with the translations. This last, after some 
time, I ventured to do in my master's presence. It cost me much trouble to explain to him what I 
was doing; for the inhabitants have not the least idea of books or literature. 
In about ten weeks time, I was able to understand most of his questions; and in three months, 
could give him some tolerable answers. He was extremely curious to know "from what part of the 
country I came, and how I was taught to imitate a rational creature; because the Yahoos (whom he 
saw I exactly resembled in my head, hands, and face, that were only visible), with some 
appearance of cunning, and the strongest disposition to mischief, were observed to be the most 
unteachable of all brutes." I answered, "that I came over the sea, from a far place, with many 
others of my own kind, in a great hollow vessel made of the bodies of trees: that my companions 
forced me to land on this coast, and then left me to shift for myself." It was with some difficulty, 
and by the help of many signs, that I brought him to understand me. He replied, "that I must needs 
be mistaken, or that I said the thing which was not;" for they have no word in their language to 
express lying or falsehood. "He knew it was impossible that there could be a country beyond the 
sea, or that a parcel of brutes could move a wooden vessel whither they pleased upon water. He 
was sure no Houyhnhnm alive could make such a vessel, nor would trust Yahoos to manage it."

3 ‐ From The Scarlet Letter (1850) by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804‐1864) 
The door of the jail being flung open from within there appeared, in the first place, like a black 
shadow emerging into sunshine, the grim and gristly presence of the town‐beadle, with a sword by 
his side, and his staff of office in his hand. This personage prefigured and represented in his aspect 
the whole dismal severity of the Puritanic code of law, which it was his business to administer in 
its final and closest application to the offender. Stretching forth the official staff in his left hand, he 
laid his right upon the shoulder of a young woman, whom he thus drew forward, until, on the 
threshold of the prison‐door, she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and force 
of character, and stepped into the open air as if by her own free will. She bore in her arms a child, 
a baby of some three months old, who winked and turned aside its little face from the too vivid 
light of day; because its existence, heretofore, had brought it acquaintance only with the grey 
twilight of a dungeon, or other darksome apartment of the prison. 
When the young woman‐‐the mother of this child‐‐stood fully revealed before the crowd, it 
seemed to be her first impulse to clasp the infant closely to her bosom; not so much by an impulse 
of motherly affection, as that she might thereby conceal a certain token, which was wrought or 
fastened into her dress. In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would 
but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arm, and with a burning blush, and yet 
a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and 
neighbours. On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate 
embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A. It was so artistically 
done, and with so much fertility and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy, that it had all the effect of a last 
and fitting decoration to the apparel which she wore, and which was of a splendour in accordance 
with the taste of the age, but greatly beyond what was allowed by the sumptuary regulations of 
the colony. 
The young woman was tall, with a figure of perfect elegance on a large scale. She had dark and 
abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam; and a face which, besides 
being beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness 
belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes. She was ladylike, too, after the manner of the 
feminine gentility of those days; characterised by a certain state and dignity, rather than by the 
delicate, evanescent, and indescribable grace which is now recognised as its indication. And never 
had Hester Prynne appeared more ladylike, in the antique interpretation of the term, than as she 
issued from the prison. Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her 
dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled, to perceive how 
her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was 
enveloped. It may be true that, to a sensitive observer, there was something exquisitely painful in 
it. Her attire, which indeed, she had wrought for the occasion in prison, and had modelled much 
after her own fancy, seemed to express the attitude of her spirit, the desperate recklessness of her 
mood, by its wild and picturesque peculiarity. But the point which drew all eyes, and, as it were, 
transfigured the wearer‐‐so that both men and women who had been familiarly acquainted with 
Hester Prynne were now impressed as if they beheld her for the first time‐‐was that SCARLET 
LETTER, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom. It had the effect of a spell, 
taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity, and enclosing her in a sphere by herself.
