Inthefirstvolumeof“InsectsoftheHengduanMountainsRegion''publishedin
1992atBeijing,China,totallytwelvespeciesofthefamilyLucanidaewererecorded
byMAWen-ZhenfromnorthwesternYunnanandSichuanbaseduponthematerials
collectedby“thecomprehensivescientificexpeditiontotheHengduanMountainsRe-
gjon,AcademiaSinica'.Of these, themost noticeablewas“Plat、,cenlsdelicatulus''
whichwassaidtohavebeencollectedfrom“Weixi,Pantiange,2,920m'ofnorthwest-
ernYunnan.This recordwasveryimportant,sincenothinghadbeenknownonthe
samegenus from YunnanProvinceuntil that time. However, I cannotbutstrongly
doubttheaccuracyofthisidentifcation,orevenoftherecorditself,becauseofseveral
reasonsasmentionedbelow.
Inthefirstplace,1:)delicatulusisknowntobeendemictoHonshu,Shikokuand
KyushuoftheJapaneseArchipelagoanditsoccurrenceinnorthwesternYunnanmi9ht
bejmpossjbleunlessartificiallytransplanted.Besides,itsdescriptionmadebytheChi-
neseauthorcontainsseveralproblemswhichcannotbeoverlooked.TomakeSu「e, Iat

体型小,較狭長,背面藍黑色, 雌虫的 色変化較大, 通常 録或 録色, 体表甚
光亮;体下黑色,腹部大多褐色或褐 色;足呈褐色或褐 色。触角浅褐色,棒部端'fl呈叉
状。
部稍微短 ,且厚,前角近三角形, 眼之前微 向隆脊形,上面有粗大刻点;
,, 眼很突出。上通A常呈黑色、深褐色或褐 色,雄性上較A長前 端尖 外 微呈弧形,上

Bodysmall,relativelynarrowandelongated,withthedorsalsurfacebluishblack,
colorationof femalerathervariable,usuallybearingbluishgreenorcopperygreen,
bodysurfacestronglypolished;venterblack,mostpartofabdomenbrownorreddish
brown; legsbrownorreddishbrown.Antennaepalebrown,andfissate.
Headrathershort,wideandthick,withthefrontanglesnearlytriangularinshape,
alittleconvexaboveinfrontofeyes,uppersurfacescatteredwithlargepunctures;eyes
stronglyprotruded[laterad].Mandiblesusually black,deepbrownorreddishbrown,
thoseinmalelonger,pointedatapices,outermarginsgentlyarcuate,bearingasingle
toothonuppermarginnearthebase,andthreeteethininnermargin; femalemandibles
shorter.Pronot11.mshort andwide,wider thanelytra,withthe frontanglesslightly
pointed,lateralanglesverylarge,hindanglesnearlyrectangular,lateralandbasalmar_
gins narrowly bordered; upper surfacescattered withminute punctures. Scutellum
semicircular,scatteredwithsmall punctures.Elytranarrowandelongated, parallel_

Clinedoutwards,shouldersdistinct, homogeneouslyscattered with largepunctures,
each elytronwith5-7rowsofclearlysetpunctures.Pygidiumnotexposed. Central

yellowhairsbilaterally.Abdomenshiny,coarselyscatteredwithlargepuncturesand

gentlyarcuate,protibiawithfiveteethonoutermargin;tarsinarrow, longandthjck,
clawslargeandgentlyarcuate.
Length: 14.9-18.5mm (including mandibles), 15.3_16.1mm (excludjng
mandibles);width:6.1-7.5mm.

Distribution:Yunnan;Japan.
Themostincomprehensiblepointisthatthedescriptioncontainsthefindingson
thefemaleat least incolorationandlengthofthemandibles, inspiteofshowjngno
「eCO「dofthefemaleinthecollectingdata.Besides,itisnotacceptablethatthelength

of thespecimensmeasured14.9-18.5mm. It is truethat delicattllus is one of the
largestspeciesofthegenusPlatyce1・usdistributedinEastAsia,andyetitslengthin_
eludingthemandiblesreachesalittleover t5mmeveninthelargest individual. It is
absolutelyimpossibletoreach18.5mm,however largeitmaybe.Moreover, thisde_
scriptioninformsusofalmostnothingoftaxonomicimportance. Itdoesnotmention
anythingaboutdetailedstructureofthemalemandiblesandgenitalorgan,bothof
whichareindispensableintheclassificationofPlatycerus.Inmyview,theauthormay
have identified thespeciesonlybecauseofsimilarity inbody formandcoloration,
whichshemayhavejudged fromtheillustrationshownincertainpicturebooksofthe
JapaneseColeoptera. Impossiblylargesizeofthespecimensmayhavebeencaused
simplybyamistakeforsomereason.
Thus, the truth about the Platyce1-usspecies recorded from Yunnan is still
wrappedinmystery. Ifitsdescriptionwereaccompaniedwithillustrations,wecould
knowsomethingmoreaboutthebeetle.Fromthepoorandpartlyincorrectdescription
alone,however,itisimpossibleeventoassumeitsidentity.Itmaybelongtothegenus
Platyce1'us,but itstruesystematicpositionremainsunknownuntil thespecimensin
questionarere-examinedbyanexperiencedspecialists.
Inordertodispelmydoubt,Itriedtore-examinethespecimensinquestionwhich
mightbepreservedinthecollectionoftheAcademiaSinica,Beijing.Atmyrequest,
Dr.YuPeiyu,theformerprofessorofthesameinstitute,kindlytooktroubletofindthe
1ucanidspecimens,buttheresultwasquitepessimistic.All thespecimensonceexam-
inedbyMAseemtobemissingnow,andnobodycanre-examinethem.
Tosolvetheproblem, IvisitednorthwesternYunnanatthebeginningofOctober
2005. Imadeasurvey inthehighaltitudinalareaoftheYunlingMountainsonwhich
bothWeixiandPantiangeare1ocatecしandsucceededin collectingalongseries of
Platycerusspecimensatthreedifferentstations.Theserieswascomposedofasingle
speciescompletelydifferent from1)delicatulusinbothexternalappearanceandmale
genitalicstructure,aswasexpected.TheYunnanraceisconsideredtobemostclosely
alliedto dundai known fromwest-centralandsouthernSichuan,but apparentlydis-
tinguishablefromthatspecies. Inthefollowinglines, Iamgoingtointroduceit into
scienceunderthenameoff)cupreimicansnov.

brownwiththeexceptionofheadandpronotumwhicharemuchdarker,aboveall in

fromwest-centralandsouthernSichuan,butdistinguished fromthatspeciesas fol-
lows: 1)sizemuchsmaller;2)coloration verydifferent;3)malemandiblesalittle
shorteronanaverage,withtheoutermarginsalittlemoreroundlyarcuate,dorsalsur-
facemorenarrowlyconcaveinbasalportions,innermarginsofretinaculaquadri-to
hexadentateoneachside;4) lateralsidesofpronotummoreremarkably angulateat
basalthirdandmorestronglyconvergenttherefromtowardsfrontangles.
MalegenitalorganasshowninFig 6a-h; paramerealmostas in P dundai,
thoughobviouslynarrowerandlessacutelynarrowedtowardsdorso-posterioranglein
lateral view;aedeagusalittleshorterandalittledifferentinshapeinlateral view;a
pairofvisor-likeprotuberanceslarger,widerandmoreobtuselyroundedattips.
FemalegenitalorganasshowninFig 6i,withtheinnerapicalangleofgonocox-
itenearlyrectangularandhardlyprojectedpostero-internally,stylusrobuster.

Notes. Hindanglesofthepronotumofthenewspeciesarerounded,sothat it

ertoknownmembersofthegenusinhavinguniquelycoloreddorsalsurface.Itsmale
mandiblesandgenitalorganarealsouniqueintheshapeanduseful fordifferentialdi-
agnosjs.Judgingfromthebasicstructureofthemalegenitalorgan,thenewspecies
doubtlessbelongstothesamegroupasl;)dunda1(IMURA&BARTOLOZZI,1994;See
also IMURA, 2005) distributed in the west-central and southern part of SiChuan
Province.
Thenewspecieswas found fromthreedifferentsitesontheYunlingMountains.
Thoughgeographicalvariationishardlyrecognizable,theLaojunShanspecimensare

Themainhabitatofthenewspeciesisdeciduousbroadleavedforestpartlymixed
withconiferoustrees(P'inus,Tsuga,Ables,etc.)nowrathersporadically remainedin
thehighaltitudinalareaoftheYunlingMountainswithintherangebetween2,800m
(abovethepinetreeandevergreen oak treezone) and3,400m (below Ables and
Rhododend1-onzone)inthealtitude.
All theimaginescollectedwerehibernatingmainly inwhite-rottenpart ofold
branchortrunk.Thefoodplantso量onpreferredbythenewspeciesareAcer,Prunus,
Betula,Tuia,Rhododendronandcertainkindofcamphor tree.Fromthesameenviron_
mentalcondition,werediscoveredmanylarvaeofPlatycerusmostprobablyreferable
tothesamespecies.Thepresentnewspeciesalsoleavesapeculiarovipositionmark
onthesurfaceofitsfoodplant.
要 約
井村有希:中国云南省北西部云山ii山脈に産するルリクワガタの正体. - 中国科学院青藏
高原'宗i 合科学考察 による 「横断山区昆虫」第一f日- (1992年5月出版) のなかで, 同院動物研
究所の馬文珍により, 「云南, 9iti西攀天同, 2,920m」からルリクワガタ属の1種がPlatyce,us
delicatuhlsという同定名のもとに記録された. 云南省からはそれまで, ルリクワガタ属は知ら
れていなかったので, これはたいへん貴重な記録として注目すべきものであった. しかしなが
ら, わが国の特産種とみなされてきたPdo/,catu/usが云南省北西部に自然分布しているとは考
えにくいうえ, 記載文にも不可解な点が含まれており, 同定あるいは記録そのものの信憑性に
つよい疑念がもたれたため, 筆者は問題の標本について中国科学院に間い合わせたが, 使用さ
れた標本は現在, 行方がわからなくなっており, 再鑑定をすることはできなかった. そこで,
間題を解決するべく2005年10月上句,筆者自ら「能ｽ西攀天同」の るz.、南省北西部の云ll ・
脈高所を調査したところ, 同所にはたしかにルリクワガタ属の1種が生息していたが, 案の定,
pdelicatulusとは似ても似つかぬまったくの別種であることが判明した.云山令山脈の種は,四
川省中西部と南部から記録されているデュンダルリクワガタにきわめて類緑が近いものと考え
られたが, 比較検討の結果,未記載極と判断されたので, その特徴的な体色と強い光沢にちな
み, アカガネルリクワガタpcup,・emi tcansという名を与え,新種として記載した.
