Description. Black,headandpronotumfeebly,abdomenmoderately,iridescent;
maxillary and labial palpi rufo-testaceous, antennaewith threebasal segments rufo-

mentsdarkbrunneous,legspiceoustopiceousblackwithapicesof femoraandbases

eyeslargeandmarkedly convex, protruding from lateral contoursofhead, tempera

Geog,ap11ica1distribution. Quediuschinetlsisseemstobewidelydistributed. It
isatpresentknownfromtheprovincesofZhejiangandSichuan,andfromtheGuangxi
ZhuangAutonomousRegion.
Bionomics. Nothing isknownaboutthehabitat requirementsofthisspecies; it
seemstooccurat lowelevations.
Recognttlon, va,-latio,1a,tdcomments. Therearesomeuncertainties about this
species,causedmainlybythefactthatitwasoriginallydescribedonly from females.
Also,itbelongstoagroupofspeciesverysimilaringeneralhabitus,thatcanbeposi-
tively distinguishedmainlyby themalesexual characters. Thereseems tobesome
variabilityinthedevelopmentofthesublatera1rowsofpuncturesonthepronotum(in
somespecimenstheposteriorpunctureisbilaterallymissing),aswellasin thedevel-
opmentofthemicrosculptureonthepronotum,whichisnotalwaysasIdescribedit
previously for thelectotype(seeSMETANA, l988,285); inaddition, theshapeofthe
apicalportionoftergite10ofthefemalegenitalsegmentseemstovaryaswell(Figs.
6-7). Itisthereforepossiblethat thisspecies,asit isinterpretedhere,mayin factin-
cludetwotaxa.Thisproblemcanonlybeaddressedwhenmorematerial isavailable
forstudy.
QliediuschlnensisisquitesimilarinmostcharacterstoQ fen,butitmaybedis-
tinguishedbythecharactersgiven in thedescriptionofthelatterspecies,particularly
bythedifferentlyshapedaedoeagus(Figs.4-5,1()-11).

Description. Inallcharactersverysimilar toQ.chinensis,anddifferentmainly
bymalesexualcharacters.Antennaesomewhatpaler,withbasalsegmentsnotpartially
darkened.
Male. Firstfoursegmentsoffronttarsusnotappreciablydifferentfromthoseof
Q.chinensls.Stemite7withapicalmarginappreciably,arcuatelyemarginatemedially.
Sternite8withtwolongsetaeoneachside,withmedic-apicalemarginationnarrower
andslightlydeeper(Fig 8).Genitalsegmentwithtergite10notappreciablydifferent,
andwithsternite9longerandnarrower(Fig 9).Aedoeagus(Figs.10-11)similar to
thatofQ.chinensls,butsomewhatslendererand longer;medianlobeslightly,arcu-
atelywidenedbeforeabruptlyconstrictedintoapicalportion,whichisnarrowerand
longerthanthatofQ.chinensis,bearinglateral lobeateachside.Paramerelongerand

sexualcharacters,bythecharactersgivenunderthelatterspecies.

Etyn1o1o1g_v. Thespecificepithet is theChineseverb“fen” (todivide, tosepa-
rate).ItreferstothedifficultyindistinguishingthisspeciesfromQ.chinensls.

Descriptio,1. Inall characters similar to Q. chinensls, but different as follows:
sizelarger,body formstouter;antennaepaler,withfirst threesegmentsuniformlytes-
taceo-rufous, remaining segments rather brunneous, legs somewhat paler, rather
piceouswith rufo-brunneoustarsi. Head largerandmoredistinctly wider thanlong
(ratio138),eyeslargerandmoreconvex.Antennasomewhatstouter,segmentsmore
elongate,outersegmentsslightlylonger thanwide.Pronotummorevoluminous,sub-
lateral rowseachwithtwo finepuncturesrather closetoanteriormargin,posterior
puncturesituatedbeforeleveloflargelateralpuncture.Punctationofabdominal ter-
gitesslightlylessdense.
Male. First four segmentsof front tarsusmarkedly dilate(i,sub-bilobed,each
denselycoveredwithmodifiedpalesetaeventrally;segment2wider thanapexoftibia
(ratio130);segment4narrowerthanprecedingsegments.Sternite7withapicalmar-
ginslightlyconcavemedic-apically.Stemite8withtwolongsetaeoneachside;with
ratherwideandmoderatelydeep,obtuselytriangularmedic-apicalemargination,small

apicalportionrelativelyshort andstout,subtruncateapically, withoutdifferentiated
apical or subapicalsetae(Fig. 15). Aedoeagus (Figs. 16-17) largeandvoluminous;
median lobemarkedly, evenly narrowedanteria inapical fourth oneachsidewith
blunt,tooth-likeprocessatbaseofnarrowapicalportionwithsubacuteapexandfine,
short,medial longitudinalcarinaon faceadjacenttoparamere,andwithsmall lateral
lobeateachside.Paramerelarge,almostparallel-sidedinmiddleportion,slightlycon-
cavelynarrowedintonarrowlyobtuseapex,slightlyexceedingapexofmedianlobe;
foursetaeatapex,medialpairlongerthanlateralpair,tworatherlongsetaeateachlat-
eral margin far fromapex;undersideofparamerewithnumerous, finesensorypeg
setae, forming two irregular, longitudinal rowsdivergingposteriad. Internal sacwith-
outlargersclerotizedstructures.
Female. First foursegmentsof fronttarsusconsiderablylessdilatedthanthose
ofmale,onlyslightlybilobed,with lessnumerousmodifiedpalesetaeventrally; sec-
ondsegmentnarrowerthanapexoftibia(ratio0.84);segment4narrowerthanpreced-
ingsegments.Genitalsegmentwithtergite l0relativelynarrow,slightly,narrowlypig-
mentedmedic-apically, anteriorly rather abruptlynarrowed intoacuteapical portion,
withoutdifferentiatedapicalorsubapicalsetae(Fig.18).

Recognition, va,-iabilityandcomments. Quedlusgangmaybe fairlyeasilydis-
tinguished fromthetwosimilarspecies,Q. c1linensisandQ fen, inadditionto the
charactersontheaedoeagus,bythelarger,stouterbody form.
Thesublatera1rowsofpuncturesonthepronotumshowsomevariability.Inafew
specimens, theposteriorpunctureissituatedalmostat thelevelof thelargelateral
puncture, insomespecimensitisentirelymissing.
Thelocality“Kuatun”isthevillageGuaduninWuyiShan,ChonganXian.
Etymology. Thespecific epithet is the Chinese a(1jective “gang“ (strong). It

Description. Black, head and pronotumwith vaguemetallic lustre; headand
pronotumvaguely,abdomenappreciably iridescent.Maxillaryandlabial palpi brun-
neous to brunneo-piceous, antennaepiceous-black, sometimesbecoming somewhat
paler towardapex,basesoffirst threesegmentspaler, rufo-brunneous,legspiceous-
blackwithdistinctlypaler,sometimesalmosttestaceous,tarsi,dorsal facesoffronttib-
iaesometimespaler, rufo-brunneous. Headrounded,distinctlywider thanlong(ratio
1.32),markedly narrowedposteriadbehindeyes, posterior angles entirely obsolete.
Eyesverylargeandconspicuouslyconvex,markedlyprotrudingfromlateralcontours
ofhead,temperaconsiderablyshorter thaneyesseenfromabove(ratio0.22);noaddi-
tional setiferous puncturesbetweenanterior frontal punctures; posterior frontal and
temporalpuncturesalmost touchingposteriormarginofeye, temporalpuncturesitu-
atedsomewhatcloser toposterior frontalpuncturethanusual,onepuncturebetween
posterior frontalpunctureandposteriormarginofhead; temperaalmost impunctate;
surfaceofheadwithdenseand very finemicrosculptureofobliqueandtransverse
waves,becomingtovariousextentsubmeshedon frons.Antennamoderatelylong,seg-
ment3longer thansegment2(ratio147),segments4-7distinctly longer thanwide,
gradually becomingshorter, segments8-10 slightly longer thanwide, lastsegment
shorter than twoprecedingsegmentscombined.Pronotumvaguelywider than long
(ratio 1.06),widestataboutposterior thir markedlynarrowedanteriad,withlateral
margincontinuously arcuatewithbroadly roundedbase, transversely convex, lateral
portionsnotexplanate;dorsal rowseachwith threepunctures;sublatera1rowseach
with twopunctures,posteriorpuncturesituatedbefore levelof largelateral puncture;
microsculpturesimilar to thatonhead, but transverse andoblique waves with occa-
sional longitudinaljunctionsdenser,particularlytowardposteriormarginofpronotum.
Scutellumwithveryfineanddensemicrosculptureoftransversewaves,sparsely,mod-
eratelycoarsely punctateandpubescentonapicalportion.Elytrafairly long,atbase
somewhat narrower thanpronotumat widest point,slightlywidenedposteriad, atsu-
turevaguelylonger(ratio1.04),atsidesappreciablylonger(ratio1.23)thanpronotum
at midline; punctation andpubescencedense,moderately coarse, transverse inter-
spacesbetweenpuncturesmostlyaswideasdiametersofpunctures;pubescencepale
brownishtoalmostyellowish-brown;surfacebetweenpunctureswithoutmicrosculp-
ture, but with numerous microscopical irregularities, surface therefore appearing
somewhatrough.Wingsfullydeveloped.Abdomenwithtergite7(fifthvisible)bearing
distinctwhitishapicalseamofpalisade fringe;punctationandpubescenceofabdomi-
naltergitesdistinctlyfineranddenserthanthatonelytra,becomingslightlysparserto-
wardapexofeachtergiteandingeneraltowardapexofabdomen;pubescencebrun-
neo-piceous;surfacebetweenpunctureswithexceedinglydenseandfinemicrosculp-
