The Author
nancy M. Petry earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University in 1994. In
1996, she joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut Health Center, where she is
Professor of Medicine in the Calhoun Cardiology Center. Dr. Petry conducts research on
the treatment of addictive disorders, ranging from substance use disorders to pathological
gambling, and is expanding her research on contingency management to the prevention
and treatment of behavioral cardiovascular health issues. She has published over 200
articles in peer-reviewed journals, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Institute of Mental Health
fund her work. Dr. Petry serves as a consultant and advisor for the National Institutes
of Health, is a member of the Substance Use Disorders Workgroup for The Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Revision V, and is an editorial board member
for six academic journals. Her first book, Pathological Gambling: Etiology, Comorbidity,
and Treatment, received the Choice Magazine Award for Top Academic Titles in 2005.
Dr. Petry received the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award
for Early Career Contributions to Psychology in 2003 and the Joseph Cochin Award from
the College of Drug Dependence in 2007.
