Lenore Skenazy
Lenore Skenazy is “America’s Worst Mom.” (Google it!) The New York City
columnist got that title after letting her 9-year-old son take the subway, alone.
In response to the media blowback, she founded the book and blog, “Free-
Range Kids,” which launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement. Her
feisty belief that our kids are not in constant danger has landed her on talk
shows from Dr. Phil to The View. She has lectured everywhere from Microsoft
Headquarters to the Sydney Opera House, and written for everyone from The
Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. (Yep. Mad!) A graduate of Yale, she lives
in New York City with her husband and two sons, who are half Free-Range,
half Facebook addicts. Then again, so is she. One thing she understands: None
of us is a perfect parent – and that’s okay.

Every year congregants ask what they could do to make a donation
in honor of, or in memory of someone, above and beyond the regular
donations that I mentioned in last month’s article. In this article I
would like to share with you the many options available to you at
Beth Shalom.
There are several different prayer books available to donate which
includes an inscribed bookplate on the front inside cover: Chumash
“Etz Chayim” ($72) which is used whenever there is a Torah reading,
Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Holidays ($30), Sim Shalom for
Weekdays ($30) and the new Mahzor Lev Shalom ($35).
A Leaf ($218) or a Boulder ($2500{there are only a few left}) on the
Dishler Tree of Life is a wonderful way to celebrate a simcha of any
kind including weddings, b’nai mitzvah, births, special birthdays,
anniversaries and graduations. When a leaf is purchased, a letter is sent
to the family from the congregation on behalf of the donor explaining
a leaf has been purchased in their honor. If you have a simcha….we
have a leaf for you.
There are also other ways of supporting the synagogue to honor or
memorialize someone. The Library offers “Help the Library Stack
Up” by purchasing and dedicating a book ($54), a bookshelf ($118),
or a bookrack ($613). If you haven’t seen the plaque boards in the
Library please stop in and take a look. A book may be purchased by
a young person for $18 and their name will be inscribed on the Book
Plaque Board.
The “Brick by Brick” program is what helped lay the foundation of
Congregation Beth Shalom’s beautiful Sukkah Terrace located outside
the Wintergarden. Bricks currently available are 4” x 8” Adult Paver
for $118, 4” x 8” Youth Paver if purchased by a youth for $72, or the
6” x 12” Lulav Paver for $236.
We always have the opportunity to add your name to the Builders’
Plaque in the foyer outside of the Wintergarden. If you are interested
in purchasing either the Gift of Wisdom ($10,000), Gift of
Understanding ($5,400) or Gift of Spirit ($1,800) please contact me. All
funds for this go to paying off the mortgage. There are still a few Major
Gift opportunities that I would be happy to share with you…just call
my office.

2013 TAX STATEMENTS
As we have done over the past several years you will receive
your annual tax statement from the synagogue around the third
week in January. This will show all payments that you made
during all of 2013 that show up on your regular statement. Any
donations for the Sefer Haftarah Project, Sisterhood and Men’s
Club will have a separate tax statement. If there are any problems,

Typically, Chanukah comes mid-month, with all of its

cleaves roughly two weeks from our school schedule. And
then January brings a return to focused but not frantic learning.

learn about the significant parallel themes in these
celebrations: religious freedom, tolerance, the centrality of
food ☺, and so on. The Board of Jewish Education provided
a variety of engaging activities in pursuit of this goal and our
Hebrew school students participated with smiles on their faces.
One of the highlights was creating a Power Point presentation
with creative lyrics all to the tune of “I Have A Little Dreidel”.
The sing along at the end was precious.
December provided us an opportunity to continue growing
our Family Shabbat services. We have expanded our children’s

We have established a delicious winter tradition with the Tu
B’Shevat Ice Cream Seder. Chocolate signals the fall brown
branches bereft of leaves, vanilla is for snowy winter, mint
chip (my personal favorite) is for spring, and strawberry is for
the fruitful bounty of summer. This is how we reinforce for
our youngsters the cyclical nature of the Jewish year; every
season brings its own flavor of celebration or commemoration.
