Anatomicalormorphologicalabnormalitiesincongenitalheartdisease(CHD)are
generallyaccompaniedbyabnormalloadingconditions,whichinturncausefunc-
tional ventricular and vascular impairments that may also exist independently of
anatomicalabnormalities,however.Interactionsbetweenmorphologicalandfunc-
tionalabnormalitiesareimportantdeterminantsofunderlyingpathophysiologyand
cause clinical symptoms in CHD. Therefore, detailed and precise assessment of
morphology and function is essential to better understand and treat this disease.
Recent advances in technology have provided useful tools for this purpose, and
novelfindingsareaccumulating.
Thisbook,entitledCongenitalHeartDisease:MorphologicalandFunctional
Assessment, comprehensively covers the latest information about ventricular–
vascularmorphologyandfunctioninCHD,asevaluatedbynumerousinnovative
methodologies,includingechocardiography,magneticresonanceimaging(MRI),
computedtomography(CT),andcardiaccatheterization.
In Chaps. 1–4 (Part I), the concept of morphological assessment by three-
dimensionalechocardiography,MRI,andhigh-resolutionmulti-sliceCTscanning
is introduced by world-leading Japanese experts. Chapters 1 and 2 describe echo-
cardiographicassessment,usingvariousdifferentapproaches,ofintra-cardiacanat-
omy, with particular focus on valvular anatomy, in detail. Three-dimensional CT
andMRIarehighlyusefultoolsforassessingextra-andintra-cardiacstructuresand
theiranatomicalrelationships,asoutlinedinChaps.3and4.InChaps.5–8(PartII),
newfrontiersintheassessmentofcardiovascularfunctioninCHDarepresentedby
world-renownedexpertsinthefield.Whilecardiaccatheterizationprovidesdetailed
information about cardiovascular function based on pressure measurements, as
discussed in Chaps. 5 and 6, echocardiography and MRI provide detailed flow-
basedaswellasmyocardialmotion-basedinformationoncardiovascularfunction,
asdescribedinChaps.7and8.
The information contained in each chapter will provide researchers and clini-
cians with invaluable knowledge of this field, and should help to deepen their
understanding of CHD. It is my great honor to edit this book with my respected
