The present volume discusses issues related to concepts, discourses, and transla-
tions in various cultures by addressing them from a range of theoretical perspec-
tivesincludingcognitivelinguistics,discourseanalysis,andtranslationstudies.The
contributionsareafruitoftheconferenceContactsandContrasts2020(C&C2020),
whichwasorganisedon19-20October2020inKonin,Poland,bytheDepartment
of Research in Language and Communication of the Faculty of Humanities and
SocialSciencesattheStateUniversityofAppliedSciencesinKonin.Aselectionof
reviewedpapersfromthiseventisincludedintwoeditedvolumes.Thepresentbook
featuresthecontributionsfocusingontheintersectionsbetweenlinguistic,concep-
tual,discursive,andculturaldomains,whilethesecondbookconcernstopicsrelated
tolanguageuseinanarrayofprofessional,practical,andeverydaycontexts.

The first part Concepts and Cultures includes six chapters. It begins with
the Chapter “Anger Is a Potent Ally. The Interplay of Metaphor, Metonymy
and Image Schema” authored by Anna Da˛browska from Maria Curie-Skłodowska
University of Lublin in Poland. In her cognitive linguistic analysis of a universal
emotionofanger,theauthordiscussesthenovelconceptualmetaphoranger is a
potent ally,whichistriggeredfromSiegel’smindfultechnique,byfocusingon
theinteractionsbetweenunderlyingconceptualstructuresthatmotivatetheirvarious
linguisticmanifestations.
ThechapterbyJúliaHamsovszki(EötvösLorándUniversity,Hungary)andJudit
BaranyinéKóczy(UniversityofGyo˝r,Hungary)tacklesanotheruniversalconcept,
i.e.tree.Theauthorspresentanextensiveculturallinguisticanalysisofbasiccultural
conceptualisationsofthisconceptbasedondatafromRussianandHungarianfolk
songs.Bytakingacomparativeperspective,theynotonlydemonstratecommonalities
betweentheanalysedlanguagesbutalsoaccountfordivergingtendenciesandculture-
specificconceptualisationswhichrevealthecognitiveschemaconventionsofthese
folkculturalcommunities.
In Chapter “Why Distancing Is No Longer Social. Blending Analysis
oftheCompound’sMeaningConstrual,”NinaShtokfromWarsawSchoolofApplied

LinguisticsinPolandmakesuseoftheTheoryofConceptualIntegrationinorderto
investigateandexplicatethesemanticre-organisationsinthemeaningconstrualof
socialdistancing.Theauthordiscussestheemergenceofthisconcept,itsuseinthe
contextoftheCOVID-19pandemicasanameforapandemicmeasure,aswellas
itsmostrecentsemanticshift.
Chapter“TheMetaphoricalRepresentationoftheCovid-19PandemicintheAlba-
nian Public Discourse” by Ledia Kazazi (“Aleksandër Xhuvani” University of
Elbasan, Albania) also employs the cognitive linguistic framework in the context
oftheCOVID-19pandemic.BasedonselectedAlbanianofficialpoliticalstatements
and media reports, the author discusses classes of metaphors used to describe the
pandemicandhumanactivitiessurroundingit.Thefindingspointouttometaphorical
conceptssuchaswar,natural disaster,andjourney.
ThecognitivelinguisticframeworkisalsoemployedbyMalcaBelén(Pontificia
Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima, Peru; Universidad Nacional Mayor de San
Marcos, Lima, Peru) and Frank Domínguez Chenguayen (Universidad Científica
del Sur, Lima, Peru; Universidad Tecnológica del Perú, Lima, Peru) who, in their
chapter,investigatetheroleofconceptualmetonymyinthecreationofsignsinthe
Peruvian Sign Language. The authors propose a classification of the metonymic
construction of concrete nominal signs which is based on their static, dynamic, or
combinedaspects.
ThispartofthevolumeconcludeswiththechapterbyKathrynM.Hudsonfrom
theUniversityatBuffaloinUSA,whoexploresaninteractionbetweenthecognitive,
cultural,andcontextualbydiscussingtheethnocognitiveapproachtolexicography.
Theauthorarguesthatinordertobettercapturevariousinterconnectionsinlexico-
graphicmaterials,cognitivelexicographyshouldbemoreculturallycontextualised
anduse-driven.Inordertoillustratethisapproach,theauthorpresentsacasestudy
basedoncolourtermsinMiskito,alanguagespokeninNicaraguaandHonduras.
The second part Dimensions of Discourse, which consists of six contributions,
starts with Chapter “#StopCallingMeMurzyn: Empathy and Political Correctness
AmongPolishInternetUsers”authoredbyMartaFalkowska(UniversityofWarsaw,
Poland).Byanalysingvariouscommentsabouttheexpertopinionfromamember
of the Council for the Polish Language who classified the word murzyn (“a black
(person),Negro”)asapotentialinsult,theauthorilluminatestherelationsbetween
theconceptsofpoliticalcorrectnessandempathyinPolishInternetdiscourse.
InChapter“BrothersinPopulism.AComparativeAnalysisofDonaldTrump’s
and Jarosław Kaczyn´ski’s Re-Election Campaign Agendas,” Tomasz Płudowski
(Cardinal Stefan Wyszyn´ski University, Warsaw, Poland) presents a political
discourse analysis of Donald Trump’s 2020 videoclips and Jarosław Kaczyn´ski’s
2019conventionspeech.Besidesdiscussingtheareasofconvergenceintheirpolit-
icalagendas,theauthoralsodemonstratesareaswherethesetwopoliticiansdiverge,
inparticularwhenitcomestoeconomicpoliciesandtheroleofthegovernment.
A critical analysis of Donald Trump’s discourse is also presented by Ester di
SilvestrofromtheUniversityofCatania,Italy.BasedondatafromTrump’sTwitter
accountandhisselectedpoliticalspeeches,theauthorinvestigatesmetaphors,topoi,
and representational strategies employed in order to focus on selected topics such

asUSA,itsrelationswithMexicoandEurope,aswellastheissuesofimmigration
andrefugees.Moreover,thequestionofdifferencesbetweenlinguisticstrategiesin
spokenandsocialmediadiscoursesisaddressed.
AnotherauthorwhoexplorespoliticaldiscourseisMarcinKosman(Universityof
Warsaw,Poland),whofocusesonrhetoricalandvisualstrategiesusedinthreeelec-
tionvideoclipsbyaright-wingPolishpoliticianGrzegorzBraun.Theauthorpresents
a multimodal analysis complemented with a discussion of the socio-historical
contextwhichdemonstratesthatBraun’sdiscursivestrategiesrevolvearoundposi-
tiveself-presentationanddelegitimisinghisopponents,suchasbureaucracy,LGBT
communities,andmainstreampoliticians.
Sándor Czeglédi (University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary) addresses an
interplay between the political agenda and language. In his Chapter “Contrasting
Language Ideologies: Language-Related Policy Proposals in the Democratic
and Republican Party Platforms in a Historical Perspective,” the author provides
a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of language-related policies, including
officialisation,linguisticaccess,andeducationalpolicies,presentintheUSAinthe
last150years.
ThefinalchapterofthispartofthevolumeisacontributionbyAgataSobiczewska
(Pomeranian University in Słupsk, Poland), who focuses on another cognitive-
discoursephenomenon,thatis,humour.Inthischapter,theauthordiscussesvarious
aspectsandtypesofhumouraswellaspresentsresearchthatinvestigatesselected
conditionsforironyandsarcasmdetectionincludingfactorssuchaspriorknowledge
aboutthedefinitionsoftheseconcepts,ageofparticipants,andtheirgender.
ThethirdpartFacetsofTranslationcomprisessevenchapters.InChapter“Trans-
lating “Language-Beyond” of the Quranic Text” by Ferhat Mameri (United Arab
Emirates University, Al Ain, UAE) and Salah Basamalah (University of Ottawa,
Canada)aninteractionofmeaningandforminthecontextofreligioustranslationof
Quranisdiscussed.Theauthorsexaminetheroleofotherlanguages,e.g.Hebrew,
ancient Egyptian, in translating Quranic Arabic and elaborate on the concept of
“language-beyond,”whichiswheredivineandhumanelementsmeet.
Chapter“TheBelatedTranslationsofTextsbyFrancesBurneyandGeorgeEliot”
authoredbyMaríaJesúsLorenzo-Modia(UniversidadedaCoruña,Spain)combines
theoretical frameworks of translation, reception, and gender studies in order to
examinethehistoryandreasonsbehindthebelatedSpanishtranslationsofliterary
texts by Frances Burney and George Eliot. Besides discussing the factors such as
censorshipunderFrancoism,theauthoralsodescribestheplaceofthesetranslations
intheliterarysystemofSpanish.
LiterarytranslationisalsothefocusoftheChapter“ComparingandContrasting
Adaptations of Classic Texts for Young Readers: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,
ortheModernPrometheus(1818).”Theauthor,BegoñaLasaÁlvarez(Universidade
daCoruña,Spain),presentsadetailedanalysisofselectedadaptationsofthisclassic
bookaimedatyoungreadersinSpanishandBritish/Americanmarkets.Thechapter
discussesissuessuchasbookdesignandformat,contentandstructure,languageand
style,aswellasinstructionalmaterials.

Intheirchapter,M.J.Zagood(UnitedArabEmiratesUniversity,AlAin,UAE;
ElmergibUniversity,Libya)andA.H.Almazrouei,M.S.Alnaqbi,andF.A.Almheiri
(allfromUnitedArabEmiratesUniversity)addressanissueoftabooswhentrans-
latingfromEnglishintoArabic.Basedonaquantitativeandqualitativeanalysisof
ArabictranslationofthebookTheSubtleArtofNotGivingaF*ck,theauthorsshow
thateuphemismisthemostfrequentlyusedstrategyfollowedbyatabooforataboo.
Floriana Renna (University of Catania, Italy) discusses a connected issue, i.e.
censorshipandmanipulation,byfocusingonaudiovisualtranslationsofexpressions
relatedtogender,sexuality,andhomosexuality.Theauthordemonstratesthatwhen
facedwithsuchtabootopics,ItaliantranslatorsofEnglishTV-seriestendtoremove
referencestosexuality,tonethemdown,edulcorate,oravoidusingItalianequivalents.
Resortingtosuchstrategiesintranslationisinfluencedbybothculturalcontextand
legalregulations.
Chapter“RelevanceandCognition:TranslatingNominalMetaphorsinXiJinping:
The Governance of China II” by Qijun Song (China University of Geosciences
in Wuhan, Hubei, China) addresses another challenging issue in translation, i.e.
metaphoricalexpressions.TheauthorshowsthatinthecontextofChinesetoEnglish
translationofahigh-statuspoliticaldocument,fivetranslationmethodsareemployed.
All of them are driven by concerns of relevance and are oriented towards the
audience’scognitiveenvironments.
ThefinalchapterofthevolumeisauthoredbyAndrewH.C.Chuang(National
TaiwanUniversity)andHaoranYang(LancasterUniversity,UK).Itoffersausage-
basedaccountoftheChineseBèipassivebasedononlinequestionnairesurveydata.
Theauthorspresentaqualitativeandquantitativeanalysisoftheconstructionwhich
evolvedfromtheorthodoxformandtranslationese,i.e.aby-productoftranslation
fromEnglishtoChinese,towardsconstructionswithironicmeanings.
By presenting these multifaceted studies at the intersection of the conceptual,
linguistic,discursive,cultural,andtranslational,webelievethepresentvolumenot
only illuminates some less frequented nooks and crannies in a timely fashion, but
alsoinspiressomefurtherinvestigationinlinguisticsandintranslationstudies.
