Nel 1964 Alberto Manguel, all’epoca sedicenne, lavorava in una celebre libreria di Buenos Aires, dov’era possibile trovare le ultime novita pubblicate in Europa e negli Stati Uniti – e dove ogni pomeriggio passava Borges, di ritorno dalla Biblioteca Nazionale. Un giorno lo scrittore, ormai cieco, chiese al giovane Manguel se fosse disposto a leggere per lui la sera, giacche sua madre Dona Leonor, novantenne, si stancava facilmente. L’appartamento di Borges e un luogo fuori dal tempo, popolato di libri e di parole, un universo puramente verbale, insomma, dove Manguel scoprira il genere di conversazione a lui piu congeniale – quella sui libri e sull’orologeria dei libri. E scoprira (lui che era cresciuto in Israele e che a partire dal 1968 sarebbe vissuto in vari paesi) l’unica terra cui valga la pena di appartenere – quella della letteratura. Con una passione costantemente tenuta a freno da un’affabile discrezione, Manguel ci fa condividere la sua scoperta, permettendoci cosi di conoscere quel che di Borges non sapevamo e forse piu conta: la sua irresistibile ironia, la passione per le epopee – in cui rientravano i film di gangster, i western e la mitologia dei bassifondi di Buenos Aires – e i romanzi polizieschi, la lingua tedesca e le enciclopedie, le tigri e West Side Story, cosi come le segrete ossessioni, il rapporto con Adolfo Bioy Casares e Silvina Ocampo, l’attrazione per i sogni e la repulsione per Proust e Thomas Mann, Tolstoj e Pirandello. Tanto che alla fine stentiamo a credere di non avere conosciuto Borges di persona, di non essere stati ospiti a casa sua.
