Preface
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the third European CAST workshop,
EUROCAST'93, which was held at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in
February 1993.
Following the tradition of the former workshops, EUROCAST'93 again emphasized
interdisciplinarity with the specific goal of creating a synergy between fields such as systems
theory, computer science, systems engineering and related areas. One aim of the workshop was
to enable specialists to meet others in related fields and to learn from each other by
communicating on a "systems level".
The papers in this volume contain workshop contributions which are strongly related to current
problems in CAST research. Concerning systems theory, they certainly emphasize an
engineering point of view. Since the computer is the essential instrument in CAST research,
close relations to specific topics in computer science naturally exist. This should be a
legitimation for the publication of this volume in the I.~cture Notes in Computer Science.
EUROCAST'93 was organized by the Facultad de Informatica of the Universidad de Las
Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The organizers are grateful for the cooperation
with the International Federation of Systems Research (IFSR) and the Instituto Technol6gico de
Canarias, S.A. (ITC).
The editors of this volume would like to thank Professor Gerhard Goos for his constructive
criticisms and suggestions for more closely correlating CAST research with related research
topics in computer science, especially in the field of formal methods in programming and
software engineering. This would enable an even greater degree of cooperation between
systems research and computer science. A final word of thanks goes to the staff of the
Springer-Verlag in Heidelberg for their help in publishing this volume.

Abstract. This paper addresses the question concerning the direction
in which traditional Systems Theory should be extended in order to
meet the requirements of new technologies which have been developed
for the engineering professions. It is of primary importance to include the
available computer technology. Although computer science and computer
engineering offer a highly developed theoretical framework, it seems that
new approaches, which more fully take the systems aspects into account,
have to be developed. In the near future an extension of the traditional
Systems Theory is required to enable it to provide theoretical support
to the application of "Systems Technology" for complex computer-based
engineering systems. Different activities such as the IEEE task force on
CBSE or the ESPRIT project "ATMOSPHERE" show that there is com-
mon awareness of this problem area. Of specific interest would be such
an extension to newly established fields such as automation engineering
and mechatronics.
1 Introduction
Systems Theory, as it evolved along with the scientific treatment of problems in
communications engineering and control engineering, is still a relatively young
discipline. Because of its specific nature, however, it is permanently in danger of
being isolated from the different engineering disciplines.
In this paper we try to show that the existence of Systems Theory as an inde-
pendent scientific discipline should be encouraged. It is even necessary that new
research activities be started in Systems Theory in order to meet the require-
ments for modeling complex computerized systems, which is a typical endeavor
of contemporary engineering.
For our purposes it seems appropriate to first discuss the historical evolution
of Systems Theory, both from the research as well as from the educational view-
point. This is followed by a short discussion of the present state of the art of
Systems Theory. The formulation of some proposals for future research involving
important problems in the field of engineering of complex computerized systems
will conclude the paper.
2 Historical Development
In communication engineering Karl Kfipfmiiller's book "Die Systemtheorie der
Elektrischen Nachrichteniibertragung", published in 1949, is one of the first (and
perhaps even the very first) which defines the topic of systems theory for this
field of engineering.
Kfipfmfiller 1 writes:
In systems theory transmission lines are only characterized by a small
number of variables and their values, regardless of the possibility of their
final realization. Therefore all fundamental questions remain indepen-
dent of problems caused by specific selected arrangements of circuits;
problem solving will be facilitated, since only the essential features are
considered. In consequence, real systems can be constructed by the ap-
proximation of the assumed properties. The conclusion is that Systems
Theory enables the study of the most fundamentM properties of the
process of information transmission.
Basically, this definition of Kfipfmiiller's is still valid today. It stresses the
fact that Systems Theory provides means for the functional specification of in-
formation transmission systems and also methods for architectural refinement
until a level is attained at which established technologies exist for the realization
with engineering building blocks and components.
Systems Theory in the sense of K/ipfm/iller did not provid a completely new
approach in communication engineering. The theory of electrical filters and net-
works and especially the "Vierpoltheorie" (4-port theory) which was introduced
in 1921 by Breisig and worked out in detail by Richard Feldtkeller had similar
goals in mind. According to Feldtkeller 2,
a "Vierpol" (4-port circuit) consists of an electrical circuit whose inner
details are not known. It is completely characterized as a black box by
measurements performed on the four ports.
From the mathematical point of view a "Vierpol" can be specified by a com-
plex 2x2 matrix. However, Feldtkeller 2 pointed out, that
the "Vierpoltheorie" nac become merely a useless game with complex
numbers unless it is related to the goals and the experience of engineering
design praxis.
That means that the interpretation of the mathematical formalism has to be
an essential part of the theory.
In analogy, Systems Theory not only has to deal with the mathematics of
formal models but also with the engineering problems which are related to the
design process. Systems Theory has to be closely correlated with practical re-
quirements. This applies not only to functional requirements as defined by the
specifications provided by a client but also to design constraints which have to
be met in the final implementation. Therefore, to be an expert in the application
of Systems Theory one must not only be familiar with the logical/mathematical
methods but one must also have practical insight. This is not a contradiction
but certainly a requirement which is not always easy to fulfill.
