Preface
This volume consists of a selection of papers presented at the Fourth International
Workshop on Computer Aided Systems Theory, CAST'94.
CAST'94 was organized by the Ottawa Center of the McLeod Institute of Simulation
Sciences, the Department of Systems Science of the State University of New York at
Binghamton, and the Master's Programme in Systems Science at the University of
Ottawa. It was held on the campus of the University of Ottawa, May 16-20, 1994.
Out of the 82 abstracts/papers submitted, 58 have been included in the workshop
program. Fully refereed, revised, and previously unpublished, 31 articles directly
relevant to CAST are included in the book.
This volume, as a good representative of the state of the art of the CAST movement,
provides in-depth knowledge on all three aspects of CAST, i.e., its foundations,
methods, and tools and environments. Accordingly, the book is divided into three
sections:
.1 Foundations of CAST: Theory and Methodology (10 articles)
2. CAST Methods (7 articles)
3. CAST Tools and Environments (14 articles)
The efforts of the referees and the cooperation and patience of the authors are very
much appreciated. We would also like to express our appreciation to Profs. F.
Pichler and R. Moreno-Diaz for their contributions as the founders of the CAST
movement as well as for their support of this CAST Workshop organized for the first
time in North America.

Abstract. The paper points out the importance of systems technology for
dealing with complex design tasks in real life problem solving especially in
the field of engineering.
After an introduction, where Systems Science and Systems Technology are
generally discussed the general framework of Design Science and related
Design Technologies are considered.
For the definition of "Systems Technology" the concept of the Design
Propeller is used. This is followed by the discussion of CAD tools for
dealing with problems on systems level. The specific roles of "Computer
Aided Systems Theory", "Computer Aided Engineering" and "Computer
Aided Manufacturing" in the context of "Computer Aided Systems
Technology " (CAST) are pointed out.
Future perspectives of necessary CAST research for applications in the
"Engineering of Computer Based Systems" (ECBS) and in the development
of "Application Specific Intelligent Micro Systems" (ASIMS) are given.
1 Introduction
The logistic need in praxis to organize complex systems to meet certain optimal
goals led in the past to the founding of new scientific fields such as Operations
Research, Systems Engineering, General Systems Theory and Cybernetics.
Today we can consider these fields under the common umbrella provided by smetsyS
.ecneicS As part of the design methodologies Systems Science is responsible for a
scientifically based treatment of problems which appear on the architectural level of
the design process. Its main concern is to put an emphasis on the treatment of
systems complexity and to relate complex systems specifications to the given design
requirements and at the same time also to possible decomposed structures which are
feasible models for the final realization. In that sense Systems

Science is a field, which interfaces on one ("above") side with the field of
specification science and on the other ("below") side with the different engineering
fields (in the narrow sense) which deal with the final realization, testing and
maintenance by application of the different appropriate technologies.
In engineering less complex systems the "systems approach" (that is to make
explicit use of the different frameworks of Systems Science in the design process) is
usually avoided. However the experienced designer makes implicit use of it. In
engineering complex systems, however, the application of the "systems approach" in
design is today a necessity. The professional engineering community takes this into
account. Of course, there has been an "up and down" concerning the acceptance of
Systems Science. After an "up", which offered a lot of potentials in the early sixties
there was a "down" until recently. Today, by different reasons, where the "computer"
and the reached maturity of the field of Computer Science plays certainly an
important role, we have again an "up" and it is the duty of the systems scientists to
keep this level of acceptance by proving the excellency of the systems approach.
2 Systems Technology
By Systems ygolonhceT we understand the collection of all systems knowledge
together with the existing tools to apply this knowledge in the engineering praxis.
For these tools the computer has a major role as an universal "realization machine".
Computer Aided Design tools (CAD tools) are common in many engineering
disciplines.
However, we consider them only then as part of Systems Technology, if they
strongly support the systems level in design. Over the last years several efforts have
been undertaken to promote research and development of Systems Technology. Such
efforts have been in the past the international workshops on Computer Aided
Systems Theory (EUROCAST'89, 91, 93, published in 1, 2, 3) which
emphasized the investigation of formal systems specification, modelling and
simulation, and the development of appropriate tools (CAST tools) for it. The main
tasks of smetsyS yroehT era eht following:
- selection of proper formal models and formal coupling concepts (formal model
building)
- provision of methods for formal model composition and formal model
decomposition (formal systems architecture building)
- optimization of formal models which are components of the formal systems
architecture (formal systems architecture optimization)
In the past CAST research was devoted to tools which support systems theory tasks
in this sense and which can be integrated to common CAD-tools.
Another contribution in the past has been the work on research and development of
the "Working Group on System Engineering" of the ESPRIT project
ATMOSPHERE - an European project in information technology which has found
careful documentation by three voluminous books 4, 5, 6. A third activity which
should be mentioned here is the ongoing work of the IEEE Task Force on the
gnireenignE of retupmoC desaB smetsyS (ECBS) in which participants from industry
and university discuss the problems of design, implementation, and maintenance of
large scale engineering systems which contain computers as essential components for
their practical realization 7, .8
