Preface
ThisvolumeispublishedastheproceedingsofthesecondRussian-German
Advanced Research Workshop on Computational Science and High Perfor-
manceComputinginStuttgartinMarch2005.
Thecontributionsoftheseproceedingswereprovidedandeditedbythe
authors,chosenafteracarefulselectionandreviewing.
TheworkshopwasorganizedbytheHighPerformanceComputingCen-
ter Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany) and the Institute of Computational Tech-
nologiesSBRAS(Novosibirsk,Russia)intheframeworkofactivitiesofthe
German-Russian Center for Computational Technologies and High Perfor-
manceComputing.
The success of the first workshop, held in Novosibirsk in September
2003,hasshownakeeninterestinaclosecooperationbetweenGermanand
Russian specialists in the field of computational science and high perfor-
mancecomputing.Inthesamewaythesecondworkshopgavethepossibility
ofsharinganddiscussingthelatestresultsanddevelopingfurtherscientific
contactsintheabove-mentionedfield.
The topics of the workshop include high performance computing, the-
ory of mathematical methods, parallel numerical modelling in computa-
tionalfluiddynamics,combustionprocesses,fluid-structureinteractionand
General Relativity, numerical modelling of fiber optical lines and resistiv-
ity sounding problems, software and hardware for high performance com-
putation, using of high performance computing systems for meteorological
forecasts,medicalimagingproblems,thedevelopmentofnewgenerationof
materials,particlebasedsimulationmethods,modernfacilitiesforvisualiza-
tion of computational modelling results, cryptography problems, dynamic

petenceoftheworkshop.
Among the German participants were the heads and leading special-
ists of the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) (Univer-
sityofStuttgart),InstituteofAerodynamicsandGasdynamics(Universityof
Stuttgart), Institute of Structural Mechanics (University of Stuttgart), Insti-
tuteforFluidMechanicsandHydraulicMachinery(UniversityofStuttgart),
Institute of Aerodynamics (RWTH Aachen), NEC High Performance Com-
putingEuropeGmbH,InstituteforAstronomyandAstrophysics(University
of Tübingen), German Weather Service, Institute of Applied Mathematics
(UniversityofFreiburgi.Br.),FreiburgMaterialsResearchCenter(Freiburgi.
Br.),Fraunhofer-InstituteforMechanicsofMaterials(Freiburgi.Br.),Chairof
ComputationalMechanics(TechnicalUniversityofMunich),RegionalCom-
puting Center Erlangen (RRZE (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg), Chair
of System Simulation (LSS) (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg), Institute
of Fluid Mechanics (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg), Institute of Math-
ematics (University of Lübeck), Center for High Performance Computing
(ZHR)(DresdenUniversityofTechnology).
AmongtheRussianparticipantswereresearchersoftheInstitutesofthe
Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Institute of Compu-
tational Technologies SB RAS (Novosibirsk), Institute of Automation and
Electrometry SB RAS (Novosibirsk), Institute of Computational Modelling
SBRAS(Krasnoyarsk),InstituteforSystemDynamicsandControlTheories
SBRAS(Irkutsk),InstituteofGeographySBRAS(Irkutsk).
This time, further to the long-term collaboration between German and
Siberian scientists, at Prof. Yurii Shokin’s suggestion the Kazakh scientists
fromtheal-FarabiKazakhNationalUniversityandInstituteofMathematics
and Mechanics (al-Farabi Kazakh National University) participated in the
workshop,herebydevelopingamultilateralcooperation.
Thisvolumeprovidesstate-of-the-artscientificpapers,presentingthelat-
estresultsoftheleadingGerman,RussianandKazakhinstitutions.
We are glad to see the successful continuation and promising perspec-
tivesofthehighlyprofessionalinternationalscientificmeetings,whichbring
new insights and show the ways of future development in the problems of
computationalsciencesandinformationtechnologies.
Theeditorswouldliketoexpresstheirgratitudetoalltheparticipantsof
theworkshopandwishthemafurthersuccessfulandfruitfulwork.
