Introduction
Abstract This collected volume representsan outputof a training schoolheld in
Madrid on 12–14 February 2014, under the coverage of the ISCH COST Action
IS1104projecton “The EU in the new complexgeographyof economic systems:
models, tools and policy evaluation”. It focuses on complex networks and on
dynamicmethodsappliedtothestudyofeconomicandsocialinteractionsandoffers
anampleviewofcurrentresearchoncomplexnetworkanalysis.Threedifferentand
interdisciplinary,butcomplementary,aspectsofnetworksareputtogetherinasingle
piece,namely,(1)theoreticalfeaturesofcomplexnetworking,(2)appliednetwork
analysis to social and economic issues and (3) dynamical aspects of systems and
networks.
In 12–14 February 2014, under the coverage of the ISCH COST Action IS1104
projecton ‘TheEU in the new complexgeographyof economicsystems: models,
tools and policy evaluation’—a research group financed by the European Com-
mission (http://www.gecomplexity-cost.eu/home/)—a very active training school
in Madrid at the Faculty of Economics of UNED (National Distance Education
University)(http://www.dmae.upct.es/~training/index.html)tookplace.
Thistrainingschoolwas focusedoncomplexnetworkstheoryandapplications
to economics and to economic dynamics generated by differential and difference
equations.Thecourseshavebeendeliveredbyexpertsinthesefields,someofthem
withintheActionaswellasverywell-recognizedspecialistsoutsidetheAction.
This collected volume represents an output of that meeting. It is focused on
complexnetworksanddynamicmethodsappliedtothestudyofeconomicandsocial
interactions. Some of the excellent papers discussed in Madrid’s training school
formthe mainstructureofthe book.However,in orderto addfurthervalueto the
volume,weinvitedotherleadingexpertstocontribute.
One of the most interesting aspects of this volume is that it offers an ample
view of current research on complex network analysis. Three different and inter-
disciplinary, but complementary, aspects of networks are put together in a single
piece,namely,(1)theoreticalfeaturesofcomplexnetworking,(2)appliednetwork
analysis to social and economic issues and (3) dynamical aspects of systems and
networks.Thesetopologicalobjectshavebecomeamajortoolforthedescriptionof
agent-basedsystems,andindeedtheycanbeconsideredtobetheskeletonofevery
complexsystem.Thestructureandthedynamicsofthesesystemscanberegarded
asemergentpropertiesofthesetofconnections(thelinks)betweentheirconstituent
